Draft:Ghulam Ali

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ghulam Ali is a Pakistani academic working in translation studies and applied linguistics. He directs the Centre for Languages and Translation Studies at Allama Iqbal Open University in Islamabad,[1] which released the Urdu artificial intelligence language tool Grammora for Urdu in early 2026.[2] He earlier led a centre of the same name at the University of Gujrat.[3]

Career

[edit]

University of Gujrat

[edit]

By 2016 Ali headed the Centre for Languages and Translation Studies at the University of Gujrat.[3] In April of that year the centre reached an agreement with the Punjab law and parliamentary affairs department to render the provincial government's laws from English into Urdu, signed at the university's Hafiz Hayat Campus.[3] Ali said around 15,000 documents would be handled in a first phase expected to run at least eighteen months, that provincial rules and regulations would follow, and that finished translations would be added to the government website each month.[3]

In September 2017 he spoke at a seminar on translation and social harmony held at the same campus to mark World Translation Day, where he characterised translation as a form of cultural dialogue.[4]

Allama Iqbal Open University

[edit]

Ali is director of the Centre for Languages and Translation Studies at Allama Iqbal Open University.[1] In February 2026 the centre released Gramora for Urdu, an artificial intelligence language tool for the Urdu language, at a ceremony attended by the Minister of State for Education and Professional Training.[2] The centre also produced an Encyclopedia of Translation Studies, launched at the university on World Translation Day in September 2025.[1]

Training programmes run by the centre under his direction have included a January 2025 workshop on lexicography directed at Pakistan's endangered languages,[5] and a five-day programme on translation method held later that month with the Forum for Language Initiatives, attended by participants working across twelve languages.[6] In March 2025 the centre signed a memorandum of understanding with the National Book Foundation covering academic cooperation in translation.[7]
