Draft:GEDEBO ANEBO

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gedebo Anebo is remembered in Ethiopian church history as one of the earliest indigenous converts and pioneer evangelists in the Wolaita region.

During the arrival of the Sudan Interior Mission (SIM) led by Dr. Thomas Lambe at Ottona (near Sodo) in 1928, Gedebo Anebo was among the initial local residents who accepted the Protestant faith. He assisted the early missionaries by helping translate Christian teachings into the local language, Wolayttattuwa, and serving as a local guide and communicator.

His most notable historical contribution occurred during the Italian occupation of Ethiopia (1936–1941). When foreign missionaries were expelled by Italian forces in 1937, Gedebo Anebo—alongside other indigenous pioneers such as Wandaro, Sabiro, and Shigute—took on the responsibility of leading the local movement. They organized secret home fellowships (kella meetings) and continued preaching throughout rural Wolaita despite significant opposition.

By the time foreign workers returned in 1941, this indigenous effort had expanded the early group of converts into tens of thousands of believers, establishing the foundation for what grew into the Ethiopian Kale Heywet Church (EKHC).
