GAMZAR (born 1994), legal name Lee Kam-chak (Chinese: 李金澤), is a Hong Kong artist and designer known for combining traditional handicrafts with digital parametric design. His practice spans sculpture, installation, and interior design, primarily using galvanized iron and bamboo to explore the dialogue between industrial materials and traditional artisanal practices. Early life and education
[edit]GAMZAR was born in Hong Kong in 1994.[3] He pursued higher education in mainland China, enrolling in the Department of Industrial Design at Tongji University in Shanghai in 2013, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Engineering in 2017.[3][1] During his undergraduate studies, he participated in exchange programs in Paris at the École nationale supérieure de création industrielle (ENSCI, 2015) and the École supérieure des arts appliqués Duperré (ESAA Duperré, 2016).[3]
Supported by the French government's Alexandre Yersin Scholarship, GAMZAR pursued master's studies in product design at the École nationale supérieure des arts appliqués et des métiers d'art (ENSAAMA) in Paris, receiving his Master of Arts degree in 2020.[3][1][4] He also participated in summer academic programs at Bauhaus-University, Weimar and Aalto University.[3]
Career and work

[edit]GAMZAR began exploring bamboo craft during an internship in Paris in 2016. In 2017, he traveled to Anji County, Zhejiang Province, where he studied traditional bamboo weaving techniques under artisan Huang Daqing.[5] Together, they developed The Clan, a vessel series integrating bamboo processing, rattan binding, and digital parametric modeling.[5][1] The series won the Gold Award at the 6th Yong'an International Bamboo Industry Design Competition in Fujian and was featured in AD Style and Elle Decoration.[5][6][1]
In 2020, GAMZAR received sponsorship from the Hong Kong-based Crafts on Peel foundation to continue his research in bamboo art. In 2021, sponsored by the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in London and organized by Crafts on Peel, he presented his work at London Craft Week 2021 in the exhibition Imagine the 'Im'possibilities: Bamboo and conducted public workshops.[1][7][8]
Following London Craft Week, two of his bamboo works—Bamboo Basket IV and Vase Yellow—were acquired by the Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A) for its permanent collection (Museum numbers: O1680346 and O1680347).[1][9]
Galvanized iron and metalwork
[edit]In 2020, GAMZAR returned to Hong Kong and apprenticed under master craftsman Yue Kwok-keung in To Kwa Wan to learn traditional galvanized ironworking.[2][4] Focusing on galvanized sheet metal—a common material in 1950s and 1960s Hong Kong—he incorporated parametric folding techniques to reinterpret industrial metal crafts.[2][10]
His metal installation YUEN (2020–2021), commissioned by Crafts on Peel for the exhibition Creations Enlivened: Metal, comprised folded sheets of galvanized iron and brass in an accordion-like structure. The work was featured in Hong Kong Tatler.[11]
In 2022, GAMZAR received a seed grant from Design Trust for his research project Innovation of Metal Folding Craft Based on Galvanised Iron Handicrafts Study in Hong Kong.[12] In 2023, he was commissioned by Crafts on Peel to create Wave, a large-scale galvanized iron fan installation.[2]
Interior design and collaborations
[edit]In interior design, GAMZAR designed his private residence and studio in Hong Kong, incorporating custom woodwork and handcrafted elements. The residence was featured in the architecture and design magazine Design Anthology (Asia Edition, Issue 30).[13]
In 2022, GAMZAR was invited by luggage brand Rimowa to participate in its global touring exhibition As Seen By. He utilized Rimowa's grooved aluminum sheets, hinges, and rivets alongside 3D parametric modeling to create the hanging sculpture Zip3 (folding).[4][14] The work was exhibited in Tokyo, Beijing, Milan, Hong Kong, and Berlin, receiving coverage in Hypebeast and Ming Pao.[15][16]
