Fuquay-Varina Middle School (FVMS) (previously known as Fuquay Springs High School) is a public middle school located in Fuquay-Varina, North Carolina. The current principal is Kris Clark, who took that position in 2019. The school was originally located at 109 North Ennis St, before relocating to its new campus at 1201 Bowling Rd. FVMS serves as a cornerstone of the local community, operating within the Wake County Public School System.
History
[edit]The school was established in 1918 as Fuquay Springs High School, a segregated high school that eventually combined with Fuquay Consolidated High School in 1971, which was later named Fuquay-Varina High School. The school became Fuquay-Varina Middle School in 1975. Fuquay-Varina High School had moved to its new location after the campus became a middle school. The original campus became a national historic building, earning its recognition in 2002.[2]
Relocation
[edit]Wake County Public School System had decided to relocate the school due to extreme overcrowding in the original building. The town's population had gradually increased resulting in the school becoming overcrowded with more than 1,100 students on the small, aging campus which the building could not accommodate.[3]
In 2019, Wake County Public School System had approved the new campus.[4] Construction began in 2022 and was scheduled for completion in the fall of 2024.[5]
New campus
[edit]The new campus opened in the fall of 2024 for the 2024-2025 school year. It was a significant addition to the community.[6]
The new campus includes two full gymnasiums, multiple athletic fields, collaborative spaces and comprehensive indoor and outdoor security equipment.[7] The campus also includes a 3-story classroom wing, modern classrooms, media center, cafeteria, a dance-theater classroom, auditorium, and more.
