Erhard Rom is an American scenic designer and projection designer.[1] He has been nominated twice for the International Opera Awards in London.[2] Known primarily for his work in opera,[3] his designs have been presented by opera companies and festivals in the United States and internationally, including San Francisco Opera, Royal Swedish Opera, Lyric Opera of Chicago, Seattle Opera, Washington National Opera, Los Angeles Opera, Houston Grand Opera, Wexford Festival Opera, Dallas Opera and Glimmerglass Festival.[4]
Life and career
[edit]Rom was born in Seattle, Washington.[5] He developed an interest in opera and theater at the age of eight after attending a live opera performance. As a child, he constructed miniature stages and scenery and used paper and plaster figures to recreate operatic productions.[6] By the age of 13, he was staging performances using painted and costumed plaster figures operated by sticks and accompanied by recordings of operas.[7] Rom studied music at the University of Washington,[8] where he received an undergraduate degree. He subsequently earned an M.F.A. in scenic design from New York University's Tisch School of the Arts,[9] where he studied with scenic designer John Conklin.
After completing his graduate studies, Rom worked with regional theater and opera companies. His career subsequently focused primarily on opera.[10][11] His credits include productions and world premieres of works by composers and writers including Paul Moravec, Jeanine Tesori, Tony Kushner, and Thea Musgrave. Among the works he has designed are The Shining (opera), A Blizzard on Marblehead Neck,[12] and Pontalba.[13]
Rom designed a production of Jake Heggie’s opera Moby-Dick (opera) that was subsequently presented by several opera companies. His work and creative process for the production were discussed in Opera News (January 2018)[14] and Stage Directions Magazine (March 2018).[15][16]
Rom has collaborated with directors such as Francesca Zambello, Tomer Zvulun, Michael Cavanagh, Lillian Groag, Leon Major, James Robinson, Louisa Muller, Colin Graham, Rhoda Levine, Nic Muni, Thaddeus Strassberger, and Tim Ocel on opera and theater productions in the United States and internationally. His designs include both scenic and projection elements.[17]
Rom is a professor of design in the Department of Theatre and Dance at Montclair State University.[18]
Style
[edit]Rom's scenic designs have incorporated large-scale architectural forms, combined with digital technologies. His work frequently combines physical scenery with projected imagery. [19]
For the Atlanta Opera's production of Wagner's Ring of the Nibelung, Rom designed a stage environment incorporating a large LED wall, scrim, and string curtain[20][21][22][23] LED technology was used to integrate physical scenery with digital imagery to reinforce both the text and subtext of the story in Salome, another production he designed using the same techniques.[24]
In 2026, Rom was involved in designing the set and creating a new dramatic structure for the Atlanta Opera's production of Puccini’s Turandot. The production altered aspects of the score, including the placement of Turandot's aria "In questa reggia" and a new ending.[25]
Awards and honors
[edit]Rom was a finalist for Designer of the Year at the International Opera Awards in London in both 2015 and 2025[26][27][28][29]
His work has been exhibited at the Prague Quadrennial of Performance Design and Space[30] and at the National Opera Center in New York City.[31]
In 2014, Rom designed the European premiere production of Kevin Puts's opera Silent Night (opera). The production received the Best Opera Production award and the Audience Choice Award at the 2015 Irish Times Theatre Awards.[32] His scenic design for Silent Night received the Best Scenic Design award at the Sixth Annual Excellence in Opera Awards in 2018.[33]
