Ed German is an American radio host, author, visual artist, and actor. He is the longtime host of the jazz program The Urban Jazz Experience and the soul-music program Friday Night Soul on 88.3 FM in Southampton, New York.[1][2] In September 2026, WLIW-FM marked German's 30th anniversary on the station's 88.3 FM frequency, spanning its identities as WPBX, WLIU, WPPB, and WLIW-FM.[2][3]
German is the author of the memoir Deep Down in Brooklyn (2011), about his childhood in Brooklyn and his service as a U.S. Marine in the Vietnam War.[4] He has also exhibited portraits of jazz musicians.[5] In 2026, he was cast as jazz disc jockey Ned Wednesday in the comedy film Not Dead Yet.[6][7]
Early life and military service
[edit]German grew up in Brooklyn, New York. He joined the United States Marine Corps at age 17 and served in the Vietnam War from 1967 to 1970.[8]
German served with Bravo Company, 1st Battalion, 27th Marines, and Bravo Company, 1st Battalion, 4th Marines. On May 10, 1969, he and three other Marines were wounded by sniper fire while on patrol.[9] The East Hampton Star later reported on German's wartime experiences while covering a 2025 program honoring local veterans.[8]
Radio career
[edit]German has been associated with the public-radio frequency 88.3 FM in Southampton under several call signs. In September 2026, WLIW-FM's Heart of the East End devoted an episode to his 30th anniversary on the air, identifying his tenure with the station through its WPBX, WLIU, WPPB, and WLIW-FM identities.[2][3]
German hosts The Urban Jazz Experience, a program centered on jazz, as well as Friday Night Soul.[1][10] In 2015, the New York Amsterdam News described German's broadcasting style as characterized by dry wit and stories and noted the eclectic selection of jazz on The Urban Jazz Experience, which then aired Monday through Thursday, with Friday Night Soul airing on Fridays.[1]
In 2020, after The WNET Group acquired WPPB, the station was renamed WLIW-FM. The East Hampton Star reported that German was among the local personalities who would remain on the air following the change.[11]
The Urban Jazz Experience is also available through NPR's podcast directory.[12]
German has also served as a host and master of ceremonies at live jazz events on eastern Long Island. In 2021, he hosted a Hamptons Jazz Fest concert, and in 2022 he presented a live WLIW-FM broadcast associated with the Sag Harbor American Music Festival.[13][14]
Writing and visual art
[edit]German self-published the memoir Deep Down in Brooklyn in 2011. The book recounts his childhood in Brooklyn during the 1950s and 1960s and includes his experiences serving with the Marines in Vietnam.[4]
German is also a portrait artist whose subjects have included jazz musicians. In 2019, Jazz Haven in New Haven, Connecticut, presented an exhibition of 20 of his musical portraits; proceeds from the exhibition were designated to benefit WPPB.[5]
His memoir has also served as the basis for a one-person theatrical work titled Deep Down in Brooklyn, in which German recounts aspects of his life in music, his upbringing in Brooklyn, and his military service.[15]
Acting
[edit]In 2026, German was cast as Ned Wednesday, a jazz disc jockey, in Not Dead Yet, a comedy written by Eric Weber and directed by Weber and Nick Weber.[6] The ensemble cast includes Richard Kind, Paul Raci, Polly Draper, Tovah Feldshuh, Toby Huss, Seth Herzog, and Bill Smitrovich.[7]
The film is scheduled to have its world premiere at the 2026 Hamptons International Film Festival, where it is part of the festival's Views From Long Island program.[7][16] It is also scheduled as the closing-night gala film of the 2026 Twin Cities Film Fest on October 24.[17][18]
