Dragon Masters[1] is an ongoing children's fantasy book series written by Tracey West. It was first published by Scholastic in 2014 under its "Branches"[2] early reader imprint. The series is aimed at newly independent readers transitioning from picture books to full-length chapter books. The series contains black-and-white illustrations by artists such as Graham Howells, Damien Jones, and Matt Loveridge. Dragon Masters has become a consistent New York Times bestseller[3] and is currently one of Scholastic's flagship series.
Premise
[edit]The series is set in the fictional medieval realm of Bracken. An eight-year-old farm boy named Drake is taken to King Roland’s castle after a magical artifact known as the Dragon Stone chooses him to be a "Dragon Master".
Drake joins a group of other young Dragon Masters under the tutelage of the castle wizard, Griffith. Each child is paired with a distinct elemental dragon with unique magical abilities. The children learn to telepathically bond with their dragons, train them, and defend the kingdom from the dark wizard, Maldred.
