Deepak John Mathew is an Indian design academic and photographer. He is a professor and the head of the Department of Design at the Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad (IIT Hyderabad).[1][2] His work spans design education, photography and imaging, and the use of immersive technologies for digital heritage preservation.[2] He is the author of Principles of Design Through Photography (2010).[3]
Career
[edit]Deepak joined the faculty of IIT Hyderabad in 2014.[1] He was involved in establishing the institute's Department of Design, where he helped develop a dual postgraduate programme in photography design and set up an international postgraduate certificate programme in photography in collaboration with the University for the Creative Arts, Farnham, in the United Kingdom.[2] He later became head of the department.[1]
Earlier in his career, he taught at the National Institute of Design (NID) in Ahmedabad, where he curated exhibitions featuring the work of photographers including Henri Cartier-Bresson and Raghu Rai.[2]
Photography
[edit]Mathew is a practising photographer. His photo series Missing Interiors, also presented as Scribbled Walls, documents how his domestic space was gradually altered by his children's markings, which he used as a metaphor for the marking of territory; the series was featured in Better Photography.[4]
His book Principles of Design Through Photography, co-published in 2010 by Wisdom Tree, New Delhi, in association with the National Institute of Design, examines how principles of design such as rhythm, harmony, contrast, balance and symmetry operate within photographic composition.[3][5]
Research
[edit]At IIT Hyderabad, Mathew's research interests include digital heritage preservation, augmented and virtual reality, photography and imaging, and design education.[2] He has been the principal investigator of projects documenting the tangible and intangible cultural heritage of Telangana, involving visual documentation and design intervention with artisan and tribal communities.[6] In 2022, a team from the design department under his lead documented the traditional practices—including music and tattooing—of the Thoti community of Adilabad district, an endangered tribal community associated with the Raj Gonds, and produced a documentary on it.[7][8]
Personal life
[edit]Mathew was born in Kerala and grew up near the Thekkady Wildlife Sanctuary.[1] He practises organic terrace gardening at his home in the Sangareddy district of Telangana, which was the subject of a 2020 profile in Telangana Today.[1]
