DeepBrain AI (Korean: 딥브레인AI), formerly known as Moneybrain (머니브레인), is a South Korean artificial intelligence company headquartered in Seoul that develops AI-generated "virtual human" and video-synthesis technology.[1][2] Founded in 2016, the company is best known for AI Studios, a text-to-video platform that converts written scripts into videos featuring AI-generated presenters, and for producing AI-generated human likenesses that have been deployed by South Korean broadcasters, banks, and public figures.[3][2][4]
History
[edit]DeepBrain AI was founded in 2016 under the name Moneybrain, developing deep-learning-based video and voice synthesis technology to create "AI Human" likenesses.[2]
In August 2021, the company raised approximately ₩50 billion (US$44 million) in Series B funding, at a valuation of approximately ₩200 billion.[1][5][6] Voicebot.ai reported that the round drew comparisons to competitors such as Hour One, Supertone, and Resemble AI amid pandemic-driven demand for synthetic media.[1]
By 2023, the company had rebranded as DeepBrain AI and, according to the trade publication TheBell, was preparing for an initial public offering on the KOSDAQ, soliciting competitive proposals from securities firms including Mirae Asset Securities, Daishin Securities, Samsung Securities, and KB Securities, while targeting a valuation of over ₩300 billion.[2]
Products and technology
[edit]DeepBrain AI's core product, AI Studios, is a text-to-video platform that generates videos of AI presenters from a written script, without requiring filming.[3][7] According to ZDNet Korea, the company reported that international markets accounted for approximately 27 percent of its revenue as of mid-2024, with the United States representing the largest share of that overseas revenue, and that it was preparing for a stock listing with Samsung Securities as lead underwriter.[8]
The company also offers a conversational, real-time AI avatar product marketed as LiveAvatar. MTN reported that the company had integrated large-language-model technology (including ChatGPT) into its avatars to enable real-time question-and-answer interactions, and that the technology had been piloted in banking-service kiosks, educational settings, and in partnership with SK Telecom.[3]
Trade publication AI Times reported that the company's platform was in use in more than 100 countries as of the report's publication, with a growing base of paying users in North America and Europe.[7]
In November 2024, Shinhan Bank opened what it described as South Korea's first unstaffed AI-powered bank branch in Seoul, using DeepBrain AI-generated bank teller avatars modeled on real Shinhan employees. The Electronic Times (Etnews) visited the branch ahead of its opening and reported directly interacting with the AI teller, which it said could handle tasks such as opening deposit accounts, issuing certificates, and printing transaction records, and could also offer currency exchange outside normal banking hours.[4]
Celebrity and public-figure AI humans
[edit]DeepBrain AI has produced AI-generated digital likenesses of several public figures. In December 2022, the company created an AI-generated digital twin of comedian and television host Howie Mandel, reported by GamesBeat as being based on a single day of filming followed by three to four weeks of machine-learning processing, and by Voicebot.ai, which noted the project as part of a broader wave of synthetic-celebrity products alongside those of competitors such as Soul Machines (Jack Nicklaus), StoryFile (William Shatner), and Metaphysic (Tom Cruise).[9][10]
GamesBeat also reported that the company's technology had already been used to create AI likenesses of a news anchor, a "soccer star" — a reference to South Korean footballer Son Heung-min — and unnamed politicians.[9] DeepBrain AI's Son Heung-min AI likeness, marketed as "AI Sonny", was developed as a brand-ambassador project for South Korean insurer AIA Life, according to South Korean newspaper Etoday.[11]
DeepBrain AI has also produced AI-generated likenesses of South Korean television anchor Kim Ju-ha (Korean: 김주하) and professional golfer Choi Kyung-ju.[2] Separately, TheBell reported that the company's technology had been used to create an AI chatbot resembling then-presidential candidate Yoon Suk Yeol during the 2022 South Korean presidential election, and that Seoul mayor Oh Se-hoon used an AI-generated video presenter during his re-election campaign to explain district-level policy pledges.[2]
