Debojyoti Bose (born 20 December 1962) is an Hindustani classical sarod player belonging to the Senia Bangash gharana. He was born in the city of Kolkata to a prominent musical family, and spent over 4 decades as a sarod disciple of Amjad Ali Khan. He received the Banga Bibhushan award in 2022 from the Government of West Bengal, which is the highest civilian honour of the state of West Bengal.[1]
Family
[edit]Bose was born to Biswanath Bose, a benaras gharana tabla exponent and disciple of Kanthe Maharaj, and Bharati Bose, a trained sitarist under Mushtaq Ali Khan and Ali Akbar Khan. He represents the fourth generation of the Bose musical lineage, alongside his brothers, Kumar Bose and Jayanta Bose. [1][2]
Early life and training
[edit]Bose was introduced to music at an young age by his parents. He started playing the tabla at the age of nine under the guidance of his father. At the age of twelve, he started learning the sitar from his mother. He later chose to pursue the sarod under the tutelage of Padma Vibhushan Amjad Ali Khan for over 25 years, and established himself in the Senia Bangash gharana.[2]
Career
[edit]Bose has performed at various musical festivals and conferences such as Swar samrat festival, Bishnupur music festival, Dover Lane Music Conference, Saptak Festival of Music, and Tansen Samaroh.[3][4][5][1] He has performed at the Malhar Festival in Bangladesh, and the Bengal Music Festival, where he presented a jugalbandi with flautist Ronu Majumdar.[6][7] The Bose brothers have performed together at various stages such as the Girish Mancha and Kala Mandir, as a musical trio known as Bosensation.[8]
Bose is an Indian cultural ambassador through ICCR (Indian Council for Cultural Relations), and has toured more than 10 countries.[9] He is also a top graded artist by All India Radio Doordarshan.[1]
Bose scored the film Jogajog(2015).[10]
Apart from being a performing musician, Bose is an active politician, and was announced as a state secretory from the Trinamool Congress in 2022. [11]
Awards and honours
