David Vinjamuri is an American author, library space planner, and academic. He is an Adjunct Associate Professor of Marketing at New York University's School of Professional Studies and the principal of ThirdWay Space, a consultancy focused on applying retail analytics to public library design. He is also a local public official, serving as a trustee for the Village of Pleasantville, New York.[1]
Early life and education
[edit]Vinjamuri graduated with high honors from Swarthmore College, earning an undergraduate degree in political science. He later attended The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University as a Citicorp/Walter Wriston Scholar, where he received a Master of Arts in Foreign Affairs.[1]
Career
[edit]Corporate marketing and academia
[edit]Vinjamuri spent nearly twenty years in corporate brand marketing, holding positions at companies including Johnson & Johnson, where he worked as a product director, and the Coca-Cola Fountain division.[1] He later held corporate marketing roles at DoubleClick, Save.com, and Rostam, LLC.
In 2004, Vinjamuri joined the adjunct faculty at New York University, teaching in the Master of Science in Integrated Marketing program. He was promoted to Adjunct Assistant Professor in 2015, and to Adjunct Associate Professor in 2021 following a faculty committee review of his teaching effectiveness, classroom observations, and scholarly contributions. From 2011 to 2021, he was also a regular contributor to Forbes.com, writing the "Brand Truth" column, which received over one million views.
Library advocacy and space planning
[edit]Since 2012, Vinjamuri has specialized in adapting private-sector retail merchandising and consumer research practices for public libraries. Through his firm, ThirdWay Space, he has executed municipal space-utilization audits and layout designs for over 100 libraries across 25 U.S. states.[2] His documented consultancies include leading the space allocation master plan for the Park Ridge Public Library in Illinois,[3] and serving as a lead designer alongside regional architects for the Washington County Gray Branch Library facility launch.[4]
In 2015, his work inspired the "Soon to Be Famous Illinois Author Contest," which received the John Cotton Dana Library Award for Public Relations presented by the American Library Association.[5] In 2019, the Public Library Association published his official manual on public facility design.[6] He has also contributed to industry publications including Library Journal and Publishers Weekly.[7]

[edit]Vinjamuri entered local government in 2018 when he was elected as a trustee for the Village Board of Trustees in Pleasantville, New York. In 2024, he campaigned for and was re-elected to the board for a third term, where his work focused on the village's municipal Master Plan, environmental initiatives, and community communication.[9]
