The Danner Memorial Window is a stained glass window made by Tiffany Studios artists Agnes Northrop and Louis Comfort Tiffany in 1913 for the First Baptist Church in Canton, Ohio.[1] The window is named after John and Terressa Danner, who were founding members of the church.[2]

History

[edit]

The Danner Memorial Window was commissioned by Annie M. McClymonds of New Jersey, who asked Tiffany Studios to create a stained glass window for the First Baptist Church in Canton, Ohio, to honor of her uncle and aunt, John and Terressa Danner, who co-founded the church.[3]

When the window was first installed in the church in November 1913,[4] the Canton Daily News stated it was "probably the finest window in the city", writing that it was "emblematical of age and fruitfulness unifying the works of Mr. and Mrs. Danner during their half-century as members of the church."[3]

In 1990, the First Baptist Church was demolished, and the Danner Memorial Window was sold to an auction house in Atlanta, Georgia.[3] The window was then sold to a Japanese corporation.[5]

On December 8, 2000, the Danner Memorial Window was purchased for $1.99 million at a Christie's auction in New York City by billionaire art collector Alan Gerry.[6][1] On November 18, 2024, the window sold for $12.48 million with Sotheby's.[6] Both sales were records for pieces by Tiffany Studios.[7]
