DC/DOX is an annual international documentary film festival held in Washington, D.C. Founded by Sky Sitney and Jamie Shor, the festival presents documentary feature and short films from the United States and internationally, along with filmmaker conversations and professional programming. Its inaugural four-day festival was held in June 2023.[1][2]

History

[edit]

DC/DOX was founded by festival programmer and educator Sky Sitney and communications strategist Jamie Shor. Sitney previously served as festival director of Silverdocs (aka AFI Docs), while Shor had worked with the festival in communications and public relations.

In June 2022, DC/DOX presented a one-day proof-of-concept showcase consisting of six feature documentaries and one short film at Landmark's Atlantic Plumbing Cinema. The event was intended to precede the launch of a full documentary festival the following year. The festival emerged during a period of transition for documentary exhibition in Washington following the conclusion of AFI Docs.

The inaugural four-day festival was held June 15–18, 2023, presenting 31 features and 21 shorts from eight countries. The festival opened with Joan Baez I Am a Noise and closed with The Space Race.

The second edition, held June 13–16, 2024, expanded to 51 features and 47 shorts from 17 countries. Its program included Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story, Look Into My Eyes, Every Little Thing and Luther: Never Too Much.

The third edition was held June 12–15, 2025. Its program included Steal This Story, Please!, The Alabama Solution, State of Firsts and Bodyguard of Lies. The Washington Post reported attendance of more than 7,400, a 35 percent increase from the previous year.

The fourth edition, held June 11–14, 2026, presented 113 films—64 features and 49 shorts—from 32 countries, including nine world premieres, three North American premieres and five U.S. premieres. It also included a retrospective of filmmaker Frederick Wiseman.
