Cyclone Cornelia, or Medicane Cornelia, was a Mediterranean tropical-like cyclone that was the third major tropical-like cyclone of 1966, in which it formed near Algeria*, and impacted Sicily, causing moderate to extreme damage before dissipating.
Meteorological History
[edit]The Cyclone formed on 7 October, 1966 north of Algeria, in which it intensified to a category 1 equivalent cyclone after passing through the Balearic Islands and Sardinia, with 1 minute-sustained winds of 150 km/h or 90 mph and a minimum pressure of 984 hpa(mbar), with the cyclone forming a distinct eye-like feature. The eye became distorted and the system weakened after transiting over south Sardinia. On October 9, a smaller eye formed as it approached and crossed Sicily, though the system dissipated while turning southward over Calabria on October 10, 1966.
Extreme damage was reported on the Aeolian Islands, although no fatalities occurred
