Cruel Instruction is a 2022 American television film directed by Stanley Brooks. Starring Camryn Manheim, Cynthia Bailey, Kelcey Mawema, Morgan Taylor Campbell, and Viv Leacock, the film is inspired by true events relating to the troubled teen industry, a network of privately-owned youth residential treatment programs across the United States. The film premiered on Lifetime on March 12, 2022.
Premise
[edit]Kayla Adams is a 16-year-old expelled from school whose mother Karen, on the advice of a school counselor, enrolls her in a residential youth treatment facility in Utah. On arrival, Kayla meets her roommate Amanda, who has been enrolled in the program before. Under the supervision of headmistress Miss Connie, the facility's staff maintains control through force-fed medication, arbitrary punishments, solitary confinement, and physical and verbal abuse. Residents are cut off from the outside world and have no meaningful way to contact their families. As conditions in the facility worsen, Kayla and Amanda form a close bond and grow increasingly determined to expose what is being done to them.[1]
