Draft:Cirencester Open Air Pool

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A historic open air pool from the Victorian Age in Cirencester, Gloucestershire, UK. Located on the edge of Cirencester Park, it has operated since 1870[1], which makes it the second oldest surviving open-air pools in the United Kingdom. The pool is fed by spring water and is run by volunteers as a registered charity.

It was originally built to a length of 30 yards (about 27.4 m), in keeping with the imperial measurements common to British pools of that era. It has since been maintained as a community facility, with operation passing to a volunteer-run charitable organisation in 1975.

The main pool is just over 27 metres long and has four lanes. Its water is kept at around 26 °C. Because of its original yard-based design, 59 lengths make up roughly one mile (1.6 km).

The pool sits beside Cirencester Park in the Cotswolds, a short walk from the town centre. It is a seasonal facility, open to the public from April to November each year. As well as swimming it hosts Cirencester's only Swim, Sauna & Cold Water experience.[2]
