Cholo Bismonte (born Pocholo Bismonte on July 17, 1995), also known as Pocholo Bismonte, is a Filipino singer, performer, host, and actor. He first gained recognition as a child performer on the QTV-11 reality singing competition Popstar Kids in 2006, finishing as part of the Top 5 (3rd runner-up) and subsequently becoming a member of the children's singing group Sugarpop.[1] As part of Sugarpop, Bismonte performed regularly on GMA Network's musical variety show SOP Rules, co-hosted the educational show Planet Q on QTV-11, and appeared in the film Katas ng Saudi (2007).[2]

After Sugarpop disbanded in 2009, Bismonte became a performer at Enchanted Kingdom in Santa Rosa, Laguna, where he joined the theme park's Enchanté musical shows and the all-male vocal group Kingsmen.[1] In 2020, he competed in the third season of The Clash on GMA Network, reaching the Top 30.[1] Since March 2023, he has been working as a signed performer at Genting Skyworlds theme park in Pahang, Malaysia.

Early life and education

[edit]

Bismonte was born on July 17, 1995, and grew up in San Pedro, Laguna, Philippines. He began participating in singing competitions at a young age, winning the Grand Champion title at the Casa del Niño Montessori and Science High School Inter-School Singing Contest in 2004 and at the 1st Magsaysay Singing Contest (nationwide) in Manila the same year. In 2005, he won Grand Champion at the OPM Solo Singing Contest of Children's Music and Library Inc. in Baguio City.

Bismonte graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Music Production from De La Salle–College of Saint Benilde (2012–2016), where he attended on a full-ride scholarship as a competing member of the college's resident choral group, Coro San Benildo.

Career

[edit]

2006–2009: Popstar Kids and Sugarpop

[edit]

In 2006, Bismonte joined the QTV-11 reality singing competition Popstar Kids Season 1, where he finished as the 3rd runner-up.[1] Following the competition, the five finalists — Bismonte, Julie Anne San Jose, Rita Iringan (Rita Daniela), Renzo "Enzo Almario" Almario, and Vanessa Rangadhol — were formed into a children's singing group called Sugarpop, named by singer Jaya and managed by musical director Danny Tan.[1]

Sugarpop became regular performers on GMA Network's musical variety show SOP Rules and released two studio albums under GMA Records and Sony BMG. The group also co-hosted a show on QTV-11 titled Planet Q, an educational program about saving the environment.[2] In a 2007 interview with The Philippine Star, the then-12-year-old Bismonte described hosting Planet Q as "a dream come true."[2]

In 2007, Bismonte appeared in the film Katas ng Saudi, an official entry to the 2007 Metro Manila Film Festival, playing the role of Carlo.

Sugarpop also recorded soundtracks for GMA television series, including "Mahal Kita" for Marimar (2007) and "Aking Mundo" for Dyesebel (2008). The group received two Awit Awards nominations: for Best Dance Recording at the 21st Awit Awards (2008) for their self-titled track "Sugarpop," and for Best Movie/TV/Stage Theme Song at the 22nd Awit Awards (2009) for "Aking Mundo."

Sugarpop was disbanded in 2009 following the reformatting of SOP Rules, which was replaced by Party Pilipinas.[1][3]

2009–2019: Enchanted Kingdom and theatre

[edit]

After the disbandment of Sugarpop, Bismonte joined Enchanted Kingdom's Circle of Artists as a signed performer from 2009 to 2019. He performed in the theme park's Enchanté musical shows, including Enchanté's Victorian Serenade, Enchanté's Christmas Musical, Enchanté Goes Broadway, Enchanté Rocks, Enchanté Viva Latino Latina, and Enchanté's Prince Robert and the Six Arts.[1][4] He was also a member of Enchanted Kingdom's all-male vocal group, the Kingsmen.[4]

During this period, Bismonte also pursued musical theatre. In 2002, he played the Caterpillar in Alice in Wonderland at Repertory Philippines in Makati. In 2013, he played the lead role of Pierre Romançon in Pierre Romançon, Producer, an original musical based on the life of the school's founder, produced at the SDA Theater at De La Salle–College of Saint Benilde. In 2014, he served as actor and musical director for Adam and Steve in the play Crossroads at the same college.

Bismonte also competed internationally as part of choral groups, winning gold at the Sing N' Joy Interkultur Chorale Competition in Kentucky, USA (2013), competing at the Busan Chorale Competition in Busan, South Korea (2014), winning bronze at the Segghizzi Chorale Competition in Gorizia, Italy (2015), and competing at the Florilège Vocal de Tours Chorale Competition in Tours, France (2016).

2016–2023: Sugarpop reunions

[edit]

On February 14, 2016, the members of Sugarpop (excluding Vanessa Rangadhol) reunited for a reunion performance on Sunday PinaSaya on GMA Network.[1] Bismonte also appeared as a guest performer at Julie Anne San Jose's concert In Control the same year as part of Sugarpop.

In May 2018, the five members of Sugarpop held a private reunion, with Julie Anne San Jose describing the experience as "kakaibang saya" (extraordinary joy).[5]

In August 2023, Bismonte reunited with Sugarpop members Rita Daniela, Vanessa Rangadhol, and Julie Anne San Jose for a performance on All-Out Sundays on GMA Network.[6]

On August 19, 2026, Sugarpop member Vanessa Rangadhol passed away at the age of 30 following an accidental fall. Bismonte, along with Julie Anne San Jose, Rita Daniela, and Enzo Almario, gathered at Rangadhol's wake to pay their last respects.[7][8][9][10]

2020: The Clash Season 3

[edit]

In 2020, Bismonte competed in the third season of The Clash on GMA Network, a singing competition hosted by his former Sugarpop groupmates Rita Daniela and Julie Anne San Jose. He reached the Top 30 of the competition.[1][11] During the competition, he performed a duet of "The Prayer" with fellow contestant Jennie Gabriel. He was eventually eliminated in the Double Elimination round after performing "Go the Distance," with judge Pops Fernandez praising his emotional delivery.[12][13]

2023–present: International theme parks

[edit]

Since March 2023, Bismonte has been working as a signed performer at Genting Skyworlds theme park in Pahang, Malaysia, where he is based at the First World Hotel in Genting Highlands. In June 2026, he joined Universal Studios Singapore as a performer.
