California Southern University (CalSouthern), formerly known as Southern California University for Professional Studies (SCUPS), is a private university based in Chandler, Arizona. Founded in 1978, the university provides primarily online higher education programs. It offers undergraduate and graduate programs in fields including business, behavioral sciences, criminal justice, nursing, and related disciplines.[1][2]

The university became part of the American InterContinental University System (AIUS) in 2022 following the acquisition of substantially all of its assets by Perdoceo Education Corporation.[3]

History

[edit]

Early history

[edit]

California Southern University was established in 1978 in Southern California. The institution subsequently operated under the name Southern California University for Professional Studies (SCUPS).[4]

During its early development, the university focused on distance education and expanded its academic offerings beyond its initial programs. By the 1990s, distance-learning programs had become an important part of the institution's educational model.[4]

In 2007, the institution adopted the name California Southern University. Contemporary reporting described the university as a distance-learning and online educational institution and noted the transition from its former name.[5]

Accreditation and development

[edit]

During the 2010s, California Southern University expanded its academic programs and developed its institutional accreditation.

In 2015, the university received initial accreditation from the WASC Senior College and University Commission (WSCUC).[6]

The university subsequently expanded its presence in Orange County. In 2016, the Orange County Business Journal reported that CalSouthern was a fully online institution and that its MBA enrollment had increased substantially during the preceding year. The university had also moved its operations to a larger facility in Costa Mesa.[2]

The university offered programs in business, psychology, law, nursing, education, and related fields. Its online model allowed students to complete degree programs without attending a traditional residential campus.[2]

Online education

[edit]

Online and distance education have been central to California Southern University's academic model since its early years.

A 2008 report by Mint described the institution as a distance-learning and online educational institute and noted its transition from the Southern California University for Professional Studies name to California Southern University.[5]

By the 2010s, the university operated as a fully online institution. The Orange County Business Journal described CalSouthern as a completely online university in its coverage of local MBA programs.[2][7]

In 2020, the Los Angeles Times reported that the university offered online certificate, bachelor's, and graduate programs in several fields, including behavioral sciences, business, nursing, education, and criminal justice.[1]

Presidential transition

[edit]

In May 2020, California Southern University's board selected Glenn Roquemore as president after he had served as the university's chancellor. He succeeded Gwen Finestone.[1]

The appointment was reported by the Los Angeles Times' Daily Pilot, which described CalSouthern as an online university founded in 1978 and outlined its academic programs and institutional development.[1]

Acquisition by Perdoceo

[edit]

In July 2022, Perdoceo Education Corporation acquired substantially all of the assets of California Southern University for approximately $40 million. Following the transaction, California Southern University became part of the American InterContinental University System.[3][8]

The acquisition expanded Perdoceo's higher-education portfolio and added California Southern University's online programs to the American InterContinental University System.[9]

Recent developments

[edit]

California Southern University's current administrative headquarters are located in Chandler, Arizona.[10]

Sunitha Araamudhu serves as president of California Southern University. John Kline serves as chancellor, and Ruki Jayaraman serves as provost and chief academic officer.[11]

In 2026, California Southern University continued to offer online programs across several academic areas. Its academic portfolio includes programs in business and management, behavioral sciences, nursing, criminal justice, and related disciplines.[12]

The university's MBA program announced that it would no longer accept new enrollments after April 1, 2026, as part of changes to its academic offerings.[13]

Academics

[edit]

California Southern University provides primarily online undergraduate and graduate education. Its academic programs have historically included business, behavioral sciences, psychology, criminal justice, nursing, education, and related fields.[1][2]

The university's online model is designed to allow students to complete coursework remotely rather than through a traditional residential-campus format.[5][7]

The university operates academic schools and departments covering areas such as business and management and behavioral sciences. Its current catalog lists undergraduate, master's, and doctoral-level programs and other academic offerings.[12]

Accreditation

[edit]

California Southern University received initial institutional accreditation from the WASC Senior College and University Commission in 2015.[6]

Following its incorporation into the American InterContinental University System, the university operates within the AIUS institutional structure. Current university materials identify the system's accreditation and regulatory relationships.[14]
