Brian G. Cunningham is an American business executive and former United States Navy officer. A Navy SEAL, he commanded SEAL Team ONE and served as director of operations of Special Operations Command Africa.[1][2] After leaving the Navy, Cunningham held executive roles at the technology companies.[3] Since February 2026 he has been executive vice president at post-quantum cryptography company QuSecure.[4]
Education
[edit]Cunningham graduated from Villanova University in 1998 with BSc in international business management.[5][4] He later earned a graduate degree from the United States Air Force's Air Command and Staff College,[5] and in 2015 a master's degree in public policy from Princeton University.[5][4] He also completed graduate programs at Stanford University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.[4]
Military career
[edit]Cunningham was commissioned through the Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps in 1998 and completed SEAL training in Coronado, California, in 1999.[5] As a Naval Special Warfare officer, he led SEAL platoons, troops and task units, and completed eleven deployments across U.S. Pacific Command, U.S. European Command, U.S. Africa Command and U.S. Central Command.[5] His assignments included director of current operations and deputy director for operations of Special Operations Joint Task Force-Afghanistan in Kabul, and deputy assistant chief of staff for plans and strategy at Naval Special Warfare Group ONE.[5]
Cunningham commanded Special Operations Task Force-West in Anbar, Iraq.[1] In November 2018 he was the commanding officer of SEAL Team ONE.[1][6] He then served as chief of staff of the Naval Special Warfare Center, the command responsible for selecting and training SEAL and Special Warfare Combatant-craft Crewman candidates.[5]
In August 2020, as a captain, Cunningham was the director of operations (J3) of Special Operations Command Africa.[2][7] His other senior posts included deputy commander of a U.S. Africa Command joint task force and director of strategy, plans and policy for Naval Special Warfare.[4] At Naval Special Warfare he worked on data analytics, and at United States Special Operations Command on the integration of artificial intelligence.[3] He served in the Navy for more than 25 years and retired as a captain in April 2023.[8][7]
Business career
[edit]In 2023 Cunningham founded Ingenium Strategies. He was director of strategy and growth at Solliance and later chief operating officer of FoundationaLLM.[3]
In February 2026 Cunningham was appointed executive vice president for strategy and growth at QuSecure, a post-quantum cryptography company based in San Mateo, California.[4][9][10]
Other activities
[edit]Cunningham is a board member of My360Tribe, a nonprofit organization that supports military veterans in their transition to civilian life.[11][3]
