The Boston Marathon UK is an annual road running event held in Boston, Lincolnshire, renowned for being the flattest marathon in the United Kingdom.[1] The 2025 edition was on Sunday, 13th April, with the main marathon starting from Boston Market Place and finishing at Boston College.[2] The marathon is widely recognized as the flattest in the UK, with minimal elevation gain, making it a popular choice for runners aiming for personal bests or qualifying times for other major marathons.[3] In addition to the full marathon (26 miles/42 km), the event also offers a half marathon, 10K, and 5K fun run, catering to a wide range of abilities and ages.[4] The marathon route winds through rural lanes and villages surrounding Boston, providing a scenic and fast course. The course is officially measured and accredited, so finishing times can be used to qualify for other marathons.[5]
Boston Marathon UK first started in 2016.[5] The event was inspired by the famous Boston Marathon in Massachusetts, USA, and is typically scheduled for the Sunday before the US event in April, due to local road closure regulations that only permit marathons on Sundays or public holidays, though the two are not affiliated with each other.[6][7]
History & Current Status
[edit]Boston Marathon UK was first set up by Harish Kurup, a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at Pilgrim hospital, Boston.[8] He was supported by Councillor Richard Austin (who was Mayor of Boston at the time) plus a hardworking committee and volunteers.
The aims of setting up a marathon in Boston by the organizers were to
- Boost the image of the town
- Promote health and fitness
- Foster cultural integration among Boston's diverse population.[9]
The first Boston Marathon UK took place on 17 April 2016 and was hailed a great success by runners, spectators and the community. It attracted almost 300 entries across three categories: the full marathon, the half marathon, and a half marathon relay. The event was sponsored in part by Boston Big Local.[8]
The 2025 marathon's official charity was the Lincolnshire Emergency Blood Bikes Service.[2] The event has become a notable local event, contributing to community cohesion and providing a positive platform for health and integration initiatives in the town. The organizer's vision was to use the marathon as a means to bring together people from different backgrounds, reflecting the town's changing demographics and promoting unity.[9]
The 2026 Marathon (12th April 2026) will take 2500 runners across four categories (Full, Half, 10k and a Fun Run of 5k).[5]
