Bedrock Robotics is an American technology company that develops hardware and AI software kits to automate existing heavy construction machinery. [1] It retrofits excavators by Caterpillar, John Deere, and other major manufacturers.[2]

The company is headquartered in San Francisco, California.[3]

History

Bedrock Robotics was founded in 2024 by Boris Sofman, Ajay Gummalla, Kevin Peterson, and Tom Eliaz. Sofman led trucking-automation work at Waymo and earlier co-founded the consumer robotics company Anki.[4]

Kevin Peterson and Ajay Gummalla were former Waymo employees who worked on autonomous trucking.[3] Kevin Peterson also previously co-founded Marble, a robotics company acquired by Caterpillar in 2020.[5]

Prior to the company’s public launch, Laurent Hautefeuille, formerly an executive vice president at Uber Freight, joined the company as chief operating officer.[2]

Bedrock raised seed funding in 2024, and $80 million in Series A in 2025.[2] In 2026, the company raised $270 million in a Series B round that valued the company at approximately $1.75 billion.[6]

In 2025, the company launched a test site at Proto-Town, an industrial campus in Lockhart, Texas.[7] Bedrock-equipped excavators collected training data and worked with a safety operator in the cab.[1]

In 2026, a Caterpillar 352 excavator equipped with Bedrock's system dug down to a predefined level and loaded a dump truck with no operator in the cab and no remote intervention.[1]

Technology

Bedrock Robotics retrofits existing equipment by installing a hardware-and-software kit that includes 360-degree cameras, a lidar, a GPS receiver, an on-board computer with a cellular link, and an interface with the drive-by-wire hydraulic systems used on modern excavators.[8]

Bedrock uses Nvidia GPUs to build AI models for its autonomous-excavator system.[9] Its lidar sensors measure the volume of earth removed during excavation operations; this data was previously obtained from periodic visits by a registered land surveyor.[2]

The company deployed its kits on excavator models ranging from 20 to 80 tons.[10] By mid-2026, Bedrock had deployed roughly 50 equipped machines and tested its technology in earthmoving operations across six U.S. states.[1]

Regulatory considerations

Because Bedrock's equipment operates on private construction sites, its regulatory context differs from that of robotaxis and autonomous trucks on public roads.[2] According to Bryant Walker Smith, a law professor at the University of South Carolina who studies automated vehicles, it remains unclear how U.S. occupational safety regulations that refer to an equipment "operator" apply to a model in which one person remotely monitors and intervenes on multiple autonomous machines.[1]
