Baber Shaikh is a technology executive, engineering leader, inventor and educator. He is known for leadership roles at Careem, NVIDIA, Microsoft and Groupon.[1][2] He served as Chief Technology Officer and Head of Engineering at Careem, leading engineering and technology strategy across mobility, delivery, payments and fintech platforms.[3] Shaikh is a founding member of the Data Institute Pakistan, a non-profit organization focused on education in data science and artificial intelligence.[4]

Education

Shaikh earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science from the University of Toronto.[4] He later earned a Master of Business Administration and an Executive Master of Public Administration from the University of Washington.[4]

Career

Shaikh began his career at Microsoft, where he worked on software platforms including Xbox, SQL Server, advertising technologies and online services.[5] He later served in leadership positions at Groupon and NVIDIA before joining Careem in 2020.[6]

Careem

Shaikh joined Careem in 2020 as Vice President of Engineering and Mobility.[2] He later served as Senior Vice President of Engineering and subsequently as Chief Technology Officer and Head of Engineering.[7] During his tenure at Careem, he oversaw engineering initiatives supporting the company's expansion from ride-hailing into food delivery, grocery delivery, digital payments and fintech services.[8] In interviews with Wamda and TECHx Media, Shaikh discussed the use of artificial intelligence, machine learning and personalization systems across Careem's platform.[1][5]

A 2022 feature by Wired Middle East discussing Careem's expansion into a super-app quoted Shaikh on technology and innovation in the region.[9]

Data Institute Pakistan

Shaikh is a founding member and board member of the Data Institute Pakistan, a non-profit organization focused on education and workforce development in data science and artificial intelligence.[4] The institute provides training and mentorship programs intended to connect students with practitioners from technology industries.[4]
