Alo C. Basu is an American behavioral neuroscientist and academic. She is Professor and Chair in the Department of Neuroscience at the College of the Holy Cross, where she holds the Donal J. Burns Professorship for Distinguished Teaching (2025–2028).[1]. She is recognized for her work on inclusive, integrative STEM education for undergraduates [2] and on innovative pedagogy in Neuroscience education [3] [4] [5].

Education

Basu earned B.S. degrees in Brain and Cognitive Sciences and Biology from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, with a humanities concentration in Women's and Gender Studies. She went on to complete a Ph.D. in Neurobiology at Harvard University, advised by Edward A. Kravitz.

Career

Following her doctorate, Basu served as an Instructor in Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School and Assistant Neuroscientist in the Laboratory of Psychiatric and Molecular Neuroscience at McLean Hospital from 2009 to 2011. She had previously taught courses at MIT, Harvard Medical School, and Wellesley College.

In 2011, she joined the College of the Holy Cross as an assistant professor in the Department of Psychology [6]. She was granted tenure and promoted to Associate Professor in 2017 [7]. She currently serves as Director of the Neuroscience Program [8],

Basu has been active in the Faculty for Undergraduate Neuroscience (FUN) organization, serving on its Education Committee and completing a two-year term as a Councilor on its Executive Board. In 2022 she received the FUN DEI award.[9]

Research

Basu's research centers on genetic and environmental risk factors for neuropsychiatric disorders, with a particular focus on effects on the neurobiology of learning and memory[10]. Her work has examined the role of D-serine, a signaling molecule that acts on the NMDA receptor. Early in her career, she received a NARSAD Young Investigator Award from the Brain and Behavior Research Foundation [11].

She has also published multiple articles on undergraduate neuroscience pedagogy, including work on integrative STEM education approaches for undergraduate neuroscience curricula [12]

Personal life

Basu is proficient in Bengali (her native language), as well as Hindi, French, and Spanish, and has familiarity with German and Malay. She has been a student of North Indian classical vocal music since 1987.
