Academic City University is a private higher education institution located in Haatso, a suburb of Accra, Ghana.[1][2] Established in 2009, the university offers undergraduate and postgraduate degree programmes accredited by the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC).

History

[edit]

Academic City University was founded in 2009 by Dev Varyani and initially operated on Ring Road, Accra, under an affiliation agreement with Sikkim Manipal University.[3][4] In 2018, the institution relocated to a campus in Haatso and was renamed Academic City University College.[3][5]

Prior to receiving independent degree-awarding autonomy, the university's academic programs operated under mentorship agreements with public institutions: the University of Mines and Technology (UMaT) mentored its engineering and computational programs, while the University of Cape Coast (UCC) mentored its business administration programs.

On 19 December 2024, the institution was granted a Presidential Charter by President Nana Akufo-Addo, converting it into an autonomous degree-awarding university under its current name.[6][7][8]

Governance

[edit]

The university's executive leadership includes Dev Varyani as chairman and Founder,[9] and Prof. Fred McBagonluri as president and Provost.[10] Academic affairs and institutional advancement are overseen by Vice Presidents Dr. Sena Agbodjah and Dr. Lucy Agyepong, respectively.[11]

Research and Public Policy

[edit]

During the COVID-19 pandemic, a team of engineers and students led by Prof. Fred McBagonluri designed low-cost mechanical ventilator prototypes (designated as the Stellar Ventilator model) using local materials to support local medical infrastructure.[16][17]

University faculty and leadership have also contributed to national policy discussions in Ghana, including issuing a joint white paper on digital accountability and cybersecurity countermeasures,[18] as well as publishing research proposals on coordinated responses to illegal small-scale mining (galamsey).[19]

Institutional Rankings

[edit]

In 2023, Academic City University was included in the Times Higher Education Sub-Saharan Africa University Rankings, placing 15th overall in the region and 2nd among participating universities in Ghana.[20][21][22]
