Species[1]

Cutibacterium is a genus of Gram-positive bacteria in the family Propionibacteriaceae.[1] Members are generally anaerobic or aerotolerant, non-spore-forming rods.[2] The type species, Cutibacterium acnes, is a common member of the human skin microbiota and can also act as an opportunistic pathogen.[3]

Taxonomy

[edit]

The genus was established through a genome-based reclassification of the family Propionibacteriaceae. The species formerly classified as Propionibacterium acnes, Propionibacterium avidum, and Propionibacterium granulosum were transferred to Cutibacterium as C. acnes, C. avidum, and C. granulosum, respectively.[2]

The generic name combines the Latin word cutis, meaning skin, with the Neo-Latin word bacterium, meaning a rod, and therefore means "skin bacterium".[1] LPSN recognizes eight species with validly published and correct names in the genus.[1]

Phylogeny

[edit]

Nomenclature follows the List of Prokaryotic names with Standing in Nomenclature (LPSN), with the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) taxonomy database used as an additional reference.[1][4]

The trees below compare a 16S rRNA gene phylogeny from LTP_all_07_2026 with the genome-based GTDB R11-RS232 reference tree. Only species with validly published and correct names in LPSN are shown. The neighboring taxa in the LTP tree are retained because they separate LPSN-recognized Cutibacterium species in that phylogeny.

C. nasicola is not represented in either source release and is therefore not included in the trees.[1][6][8]
