Christopher Andrés Álvarez García (born 16 September 2001), known professionally as Cris MJ, is a Chilean singer and songwriter from La Serena.[1][2] He gained international recognition with "Una Noche en Medellín" in 2022. Its 2023 remix with Karol G and Ryan Castro reached number 68 on the US Billboard Hot 100.[3]
In 2024, he collaborated with FloyyMenor on "Gata Only", which peaked at number 27 on the Billboard Hot 100.[4] The song won Global 200 Latin Song of the Year at the 2024 Billboard Latin Music Awards and Top Latin Song at the 2024 Billboard Music Awards.[5][6]
Career
[edit]2019–2021: Beginnings
[edit]Álvarez began posting his own music online around 2019 and subsequently released singles and collaborations within Chile's urban music scene.[1] His stage name combines a shortened form of his first name with the initials of Mala Junta, the name used by a group of his father's friends.[2][7]
His early releases included "Locura y Maldad" and "Los Malvekes", a collaboration with Marcianeke and Simón la Letra.[8]
2022–2023: International breakthrough
[edit]Álvarez released "Una Noche en Medellín" in January 2022. The song gained popularity through TikTok and appeared on music charts in several countries.[7][2] Following its success, he undertook his first international tour, which included dates in Mexico and Colombia.[9]
During 2022, he collaborated with Gotay on "Yo No Me Olvido", with Polimá Westcoast and Young Cister on "Sextime", and with Ak4:20 and Pailita on "Me Arrepentí".[10][11][12]
He and Standly released "Marisola" in July 2022. A remix featuring Argentine performers Duki and Nicki Nicole followed in December.[13] His debut studio album, Welcome to My World, was released on 23 November 2022.[14]
A remix of "Una Noche en Medellín" featuring Karol G and Ryan Castro was released in 2023 and appeared on Karol G's album Mañana Será Bonito (Bichota Season).[3] Álvarez released his second studio album, Partyson, on 9 November 2023.[15]
2024–present: "Gata Only" and later releases
[edit]On 2 February 2024, Álvarez appeared on FloyyMenor's single "Gata Only". The collaboration developed after Álvarez contacted FloyyMenor about joining the song.[16] It reached number 27 on the Billboard Hot 100 and topped the US Hot Latin Songs chart.[4][17]
He released "Si No Es Contigo" in May 2024. The single reached number 72 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number three on Hot Latin Songs.[18][19] A remix featuring Kali Uchis and Jhayco was released in October.[20]
Álvarez and FloyyMenor released the two-song collaborative project MJ in September 2024. It contained "Déjame Pensar" and "Después de la 1".[21]
In 2025, he toured Spain as part of the Apocalipsis Tour, with performances in cities including Madrid, Barcelona, Bilbao and Seville.[22] His third studio album, Apocalipsis, was released on 27 June 2025. The 18-track album incorporated reggaeton and pop elements and included the single "Vamo a Bailotear".[23] He released his fourth studio album, LAS FILTRADAS, on 25 December 2025.[24]
