I looked at all Kafka's novels (only 3) and thought the most likely (from the German translation) to be a personal name was Schloss. Then I looked through all the United States soccer players. I now think Jeff Cassar could be it, after searching through all sorts of Joe and Joseph-variations and also Max-variations, unless Joe-Max Moore could be it.
