- Soil science as in the study of the pedosphere.
- The two main branches of soil science are pedology and edaphology.
- Pedology deals with soils in its natural setting and includes soil morphology and soil classification.
- Edaphology deals with soil as it affects people, plants and animals and includes agricultural soil science and environmental soil science.
- The categorical sub fields of soil science are soil chemistry, soil physics, soil biology and soil scientists
