Translating
[edit]If you want to translate content please sign-up and leave a note at User talk:Doc James
- This tool tells you which of the short articles are ready for translation have no content in your language (simply change the language code from "hi" (Hindi) to your language code and hit "do it")
The following guide is aimed at those who do not have knowledge of Wiki code/Wiki markup.
Instructions on "Wiki code" |
|---|
Instructions on "Wiki code"[edit]Wikipedia articles have a special syntax that provides format, references and connectivity between different text areas and resources. Translating a Wikipedia article requires leaving this "metatext" undisturbed, as it will be used by the Wikipedia team to integrate the translations into the target-language Wikipedia. The unique Wiki-markup does look a bit confusing at first and to assist our translators we always include this Support file you are reading now {Instructions_on_Wiki_code} on each job (top right). As a general rule, no codes and no tags should be altered or deleted. This covers practically any and all symbols, double square brackets, greater/less-than signs, etc. This also includes double apostrophes that you may (reasonably) perceive as quotation marks. Double apostrophes in Wiki actually serve a function: they are used to italicize the text. Anything between the tags < ref > and should be left untranslated; these lead to the references listed in the footnotes. Blue texts between square brackets represent existing pages in Wikipedia and should be translated while keeping the brackets in place. An example for the blue hyperlink is potentially infectious, where the word before the | is the title of the page where this word will link to, and the word(s) following the | is what readers will actually see in the article. It is recommended to translate all words on both sides of the | and the Wiki integrator can later verify if such page actually exists on the target Wikipedia or not. In summary, when working with Wikipedia articles, deleting or altering even the most minute tag or code may have disastrous effects, so it's best to leave them. CAT tools are typically not recommended. If you would like to learn more about formatting and editing Wikipedia text, please refer to the Wikipedia Editing guidelines: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Tutorial/Editing Further useful pages are the Wikipedia Cheatsheet: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Cheatsheet and Wikipedia Plain and Simple: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:PANDS Please continue to the next page for specific examples. Link to another page: copy edit - will read: copy edit Plural form: copy editors - will read: copy editors (The title of the page is 'copy edit') Pipe a link to change the link's text: Android - will read: Android (Text before the | character is the exact title of the page where the word after the | character links to.) Titles and subtitles: Laboratory testing[edit]A test called a throat culture is the main way[1] to know if a person has strep throat. Laboratory testing[edit]The symbols "===" indicate a title level. These symbols must be maintained and the text between them (in this case "Laboratory testing") should be translated. References: The symbols "<" and ">" are tag delimiters and everything between them should be left untouched, for instance [3]. The symbols "{{" and "}}" indicate a reference and they should be untouched, together with everything between them. Please note that all the area to be left undisturbed looks grayed in the original. In summary, the text to translate in this section is: "Laboratory testing A test called a throat culture is the main way to know if a person has strep throat." Please note that text not included in the exceptions indicated above should be translated, for instance: "One point is given for each of these criteria:[4]
Only "ref name=Review09/" should be left untranslated |
