For all that the top spot regarded a new epic in Ancient Greece, most of this list concerns a game that warranted a Don't Cry For Me Argentina... (what a missed opportunity by Madonna at the halftime show!)

1	The Odyssey (2026 film)		5,121,181		Christopher Nolan (#13) making epic movies leads to him adapting one of the original epics (#4). Matt Damon heads a star-studded cast as Odysseus, the king of Ithaca who after helping the Greeks win the Trojan War takes 10 years to return home (and nearly three hours of runtime!) due to both bad luck and divine intervention. The Odyssey already started its box office run making back its $250 million budget in a single weekend, and should top the second as well. Just not the third, given a literal couple of its actors, Tom Holland (Odysseus' son Telemachus) and Zendaya (the goddess Athena), have a blockbuster of their own.
2	Lamine Yamal		3,164,090		For all the damage he caused at Euro 2024, Yamal didn't have a breakout World Cup, with many dribbles but scoring only one goal. Still, Spain's victory 6 days after Yamal's 19th birthday made him the third youngest football world champion after Pelé and Giuseppe Bergomi, and he has much room for improvement until 2030!
3	2026 FIFA World Cup		2,062,454		One day after a high-scoring third place match, came a final that was a battle of attrition: the highly tactical Spain prevented Argentina from going further than midfield, and the South Americans became the first finalist ever to not shoot on goal for the whole 90 minutes of regulation – and they decided to compensate their inferiority through violence, getting four yellow cards plus a red once Pau Cubarsí was sent flying. Only many miraculous saves by Emiliano Martínez prevented a Spanish victory before the start of a grueling overtime, where eventually #21 knocked a header towards #12, who found the net to guarantee the second Iberian title (and as if losing wasn't enough, the Argentinians started a fight and turned their backs as the trophy was lifted). Aside from Kylian Mbappé being the top goalscorer, Spain's victory extended to the tournament's individual awards: captain Rodri (#15) was the best player, Cubarsí the best young player, and Unai Simón was chosen best goalkeeper for being scored on only once across 8 games.
4	Odyssey		1,773,222		Called an epic for a reason, Homer's poem of over 12,000 lines is one of the oldest surviving works of literature today. Believed composed in 8th century BC, it became canon around two centuries later. Odyssey has been adapted in innumerable forms of media, as it is considered the "birthplace of literary fiction". The latest film adaptation (#1) premiered theatrically last week.
5	Lionel Messi		1,600,217		For as much as he's been called a GOAT, that certainly makes him less than a King, as Pelé won the two World Cup finals he played, being crucial in both, as opposed to Messi only making a difference in one out of three decisive games he appeared in. He also managed a "silver treble" at #3, being tournament runner-up, second best player behind Rodri, and second highest scorer behind Mbappé.
6	Andy Burnham		1,591,367		The UK got a new prime minister this week, after Andy Burnham took over from Keir Starmer as leader of the governing Labour Party. Burnham was previously the mayor of Greater Manchester in the north of England; he's been a prominent figure in the UK for a while, and actually ran for the Labour leadership in 2010 and 2015 as well. This time he was elected unopposed after winning a huge victory in a parliamentary by-election, with his predecessor having developed a chronic case of extreme unpopularity.
7	Shakira		1,461,066		Colombia couldn't get further than the round of 16 at #3, but one of their greatest exports ever was still at the final. After all, Shakira has become the Shirley Bassey of World Cup themes, and 20 years after performing "Hips Don't Lie" at the closing ceremony of the 2006 Cup she was there to sing the tournament's official song "Dai Dai", having also done 2010's "Waka Waka" and contributing a remix of "Dare (La La La)" in 2014.
8	List of FIFA World Cup finals		1,211,919		#3's was the 22nd (23rd if you count the Maracanazo), and the first to have a halftime show akin to the final of the sport the game's host United States calls football. Aside from the above being joined by Nigeria's Burna Boy and Uganda's Ghetto Kids, Justin Bieber's weirdly religious serenade and an explosive choreography by BTS, the queen of pop music Madonna helped remind viewers of who is the biggest World Cup winner as she was driven into MetLife Stadium New York/New Jersey Stadium by the two Ronaldos that got Brazil the 2002 title while (here's him again!) Pelé appeared on the screen behind them.
9	Kaylee Hottle		1,159,096		A deaf actress who after having an enormous friend in King Kong across two movies tragically got her life cut short at just 18 due to a car crash.
10	Kevin Keegan		1,146,103		After entries on football and death, an English footballer who died aged 75 of cancer. As a player, Keegan earned the nickname "Mighty Mouse" winning many titles with Liverpool F.C. and Hamburg SV in the 1970s while also playing the 1982 World Cup for England. As a manager, he got another sobriquet, "King Kev", helping three teams be promoted to the Premier League while also having a short tenure coaching the English Team.
11	FIFA World Cup		1,118,684		When football got its proper world championship in 1930, it had 13 teams in just one city, mostly because the Europeans didn't want to travel to Uruguay. 96 years later, the 23rd edition up there at #3 had 48 squads in 16 cities spread across 3 countries. It also reportedly generated $15 billion in revenue! And somehow FIFA president Gianni Infantino is trying to get even more money out of the tournament, if not football itself.
12	Ferran Torres		1,109,277		Since the above is a tournament where history tends to repeat, 2010 had Spain winning with Fernando Torres in the roster and an overtime final goal by Andrés Iniesta, a 26 year-old playing for FC Barcelona... and #3 had the overtime final goal scored by Ferran Torres, a 26 year-old playing for Barça.
13	Christopher Nolan		1,030,185		Fresh off proving that moviegoers will happily endure nearly three hours of ancient Greek hexameter as long as his name is on the poster. Nolan lands here thanks to the big opening of The Odyssey (#1). Viewers flooded his page to inspect the mastermind who convinced Universal Pictures to shoot the Bronze Age on custom IMAX 70mm film stock, extend his cinematic obsession with leaving Matt Damon stranded far from home, and turn a 3,000-year-old poem (#4) into a $264.5 million opening.
14	Deaths in 2026		960,674		Let's quote #7: She's talking and walking just to work you up And she'd died for your love But your love's only mine, now...
15	Rodri (footballer, born 1996)		928,313		Rodrigo Hernández Cascante had not won any of the viewer-voted Player of the Match at #3, having no goals or assists at the tournament, but still got the Golden Ball as the best player of the championship, given Spain controlling its games owes much to Rodri's constant and effective passing: 747 passes, 101 on the final. He also ran a total of 96km across the World Cup.
16	Spain national football team		920,736		The only team out of the 8 winners of #8/#11 to only get titles outside their continent – in fact, Spain only won a knockout match in Europe once! – as after winning the first African tournament in an aggressive game with 1–0 on overtime, #3 had everything repeating in the New Jersey Meadowlands. Spain is also the first country to hold the male and female World Cup title simultaneously!
17	Obsession (2025 film)		889,227		#1 dominated the weekend box office, and seventh place after over two months in theaters is this thriller still getting its title for a reaction. Star Inde Navarrette even took her newfound fame to go from streaming Call of Duty to speak in a panel promoting the next game in the series!
18	Leandro Paredes		869,054		During the 2006 FIFA World Cup, Leandro Cufré got a red card after a match was over given he reacted to his Argentina losing the penalty shootouts to Germany attacking Per Mertesacker. #3 provided another opportunity for an Argentinian Leandro to be expelled for post-game violence, given that as soon as the final whistle was blown and #16 were champions, Leandro Paredes started a physical altercation against Eric García and Gavi. But the ref only ordered him to leave the stadium, and the Argentine Football Association faced FIFA disciplinary proceedings.
19	2030 FIFA World Cup		825,681		The centennial edition of #11 already complicated things regarding host countries: rather than just letting Uruguay repeat 1930, only this time sharing duties with Argentina and Paraguay, the three countries will only get a match each before it moves to three other countries across the ocean, Spain, Portugal and Morocco. And now there are rumors that after #3 had an already massive 48 teams FIFA is pushing for 64, which is certainly a bloated number in spite of making playoff qualification easier by not requiring third placed teams.
20	Dharmendra Pradhan		819,787		The protest movement that had been building in India kicked into high gear this week, with the largely youth-led movement demanding the resignation of Pradhan, the Education Minister. The movement began after the government screwed up an important exam, but has since morphed into general protest against the right-wing BJP government. Pradhan eventually left on the 25th, but it's unclear where things will go from here.
21	Nico Williams		762,825		Whereas #2's little brother might be afraid of this player's tarantula-like hair, this here writer developed a secret celebrity crush on him all the way back during the Euro 2024 final where he was later named the man of the match. Two years later, Williams provided the assist for the only goal at #3's final, helping his country win their second world title, and later gifted his gold medal to his mother, honoring her journey crossing the Sahara Desert from Ghana to Spain while pregnant with his older brother Iñaki.
22	Pralhad Joshi		758,026		#20's replacement. Joshi was already the Minister of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution and Minister of New and Renewable Energy, and was previously the Minister of Mines and a BJP state head before that.
23	Marc Cucurella		741,400		Chelsea FC won the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup in East Rutherford, and one of their players returned to the same stadium one year later and got the title of #3, namely this hairy defender who had only one cap for #16's senior team before 2024, but has since become a mainstay of the squad. Cucurella is now going to play back home, having signed a big deal with Real Madrid.
24	Gerard Piqué		732,627		While understandably most of the team that got #16 their first title in 2010 was watching the final of #3, one had extra reason to be there, as former defender Gerard Piqué had to let his sons see their mother #7 perform - the couple had an acrimonious split after 12 years together in 2022 once he was caught cheating (a pot of jam was rumoured to be involved...), leading to a diss track where among other things Shakira sang "you traded a Ferrari for a Twingo".
25	Sonam Wangchuk		716,076		The hero of India's protestors ended his hunger strike on the 23rd after 26 days of fasting; Wangchuk stated that he lost 11 kilograms of weight during the strike. Wangchuk's protest certainly played a major role in the movement, which have marked a major defeat for Modi's government and the first time in his premiership where he has truly lost control of the narrative domestically.
