Election FAQ
[edit]What is the Members' Meeting?
The Members' Meeting is when the WikiNYC community votes to elect a new Board of Directors.
How many people will be elected to the WikiNYC Board?
This meeting will fill three elected seats, half of the elected seats on the board. Once in place, the six elected board members (including the three still serving from last year) can appoint up to five more, for a total of up to eleven. Elected board members serve a term of two years, and appointed board members a term of one year.
How are officers selected?
There are four standard officer positions: President, Vice-President, Treasurer, and Secretary. Nominees may indicate interest in serving in one of these roles, but the board members will decide on these appointments internally.
What are the responsibilities of being a WikiNYC board member?
The WikiNYC board is responsible for the overall governance of the organization. Some legal details are available in our bylaws. The board manages finances, keeps track of membership, develops and implements strategic priorities, engages in annual planning processes, applies for grants, writes grant reports, maintains communications with the Wikimedia Foundation, holds monthly board meetings, handles issues regarding the code of conduct, pursues or facilitates events and relationships that further our goals, and works with accountants, lawyers, consultants, and any other relevant professionals whose services the organization requires. Not every board member is active in all of these areas, but nominees should expect to be involved with most of them to some degree. Despite a long list of responsibilities, it is not a full-time commitment. Separated from the volunteer activities any WikiNYC member can participate in, most board members probably spend an average of about 5-10 hours/month on official duties, with somewhat more time for officers.
If you want to learn more about people's experiences, reach out to one of the current board members listed on our Meta page.
Are board members compensated for their time?
No. This is a volunteer board.
Do I have to divulge my real name?
You are welcome to just use your Wikimedia username during the nomination phase. However, if elected, board members do have their real names and usernames published publicly.
Who is eligible to be an elected board member?
Nominees must:
- be dues-paying members of Wikimedia New York City (contact info
wikimedianyc.org if you're not sure if your membership is current) - live primarily in New York or the greater New York Metropolitan Area
- nominate themselves on the nomination page by 11:59 PM (Eastern Time) on September 21. Note that this ahead of the meeting to ensure voters sufficient time to read about the candidates.
How do I vote?
- You must be a dues-paying member of Wikimedia New York City, having renewed in the past 12 months (since Sep 2025)
- Register to join at wikimedianyc.org membership form
- Voting will be online, via emailed ballots from the ElectionBuddy service
- Poll will be open for the 48 hours from 8pm September 28 to 8pm September 30
- Contact info
wikimedianyc.org for any membership questions, to confirm your status, and to ensure your ballot is sent to your preferred email
How do I nominate myself?
Edit the Nomination page and copy the template there. Paste it in a subsection under the "nominations" header underneath. Change the subsection heading to be your username. Note that some of the questions have word limits. For fairness, we will be checking the word count and truncating statements that go too long.

- Have you been on the WikiNYC board in the past? If so, when?
- Current WikiNYC board member and chair of the Engagement Committee
- Describe your involvement with WikiNYC in the past. If you were a board member in the past, please also include a summary of the contributions to chapter governance you're most proud of. [500 words max]
- My contributions to Wikipedia have been coordinating events off-Wiki. I love to gather a bunch of Wikipedians in rooms and watch them innovate in real time. My interest in Wikipedia began with the platform's gender disparity. I wrote articles about Women in Journalism that were subsequently taken down. My resilience in coming back to the platform that reverses most of my edits shows that editors exist on a spectrum. I want to be re-elected to the WikiNYC board to show that every contribution to the Open Knowledge movement is important.
- Why do you want to join the WikiNYC board? In what ways would you be most interested to help? [500 words max]
- I want to continue my position on this board to further the Open Knowledge movement into all my favorite interests. And the interests of the interested parties I write about. Because new knowledge can come from anywhere. But it should all end up on Wikipedia.
- Which, if any, of the officer positions align with your skills and interests? (President, Vice-President, Treasurer, Secretary). This is just to gauge interest; the elected board will decide who should be in which position. Answers like "none of the above" or "I'd prefer to wait and see" are acceptable.
- I would like to continue my position as the Engagement Committee Chair.

- I've been involved with WikiNYC for the past year and some change. I first got involved at a UN Edit-a-thon and have since participated in several programs around creating/editing articles related to NYC and topics where I have some interest and expertise.
- Why do you want to join the WikiNYC board? In what ways would you be most interested to help? [500 words max]
- I'm new to the WikiNYC community, but I really cherish it. Everyone has been warm and welcoming, and it has fueled a new hobby for editing for me. The Open Knowledge and public commons movement is deeply important to me, and I'd like to contribute back by volunteering on the board. I can help with connecting this community with the broader Trust and Safety world, as well as other local communities like the AT protocol folks.

I have been an editor since 2012 and have also been an administrator since 2025. In addition to my edits regarding NYC topics, I try my best to attend monthly meetings and annual meetups.

- I have coordinated an event with Wikipedia for Pride that introduced Wikipedia to LGBTQ+ and Black community members, which I am most proud of. I also have attended Wikipedia Day for 2 years in a row, and I’ve become a frequent attendee of WikiWednesday. I also attended the Wikipedia pop up at the Occulus.

- I'm a relative newcomer to the WikiNYC community. I've attended WikiWednesdays, demos at the Oculus and some other Wiki-related events, and will be attending the Queering Wiki 2026 conference next month. I've poked around Wikipedia and made small contributions across different profiles since I was in high school, but since moving to New York in 2025 became more aware of the community behind Wikipedia and more interested in getting involved in the movement that powers it.
- Why do you want to join the WikiNYC board? In what ways would you be most interested to help? [500 words max]
- I work as a data journalist and am passionate about making information public and accessible, especially online. I'd like to apply the skills I've learned reporting, writing and coding to my work on Wikipedia, and am especially excited by opportunities to develop tools and applications on the site. As a board member specifically, I'd bring a history of group leadership and event planning, and also have the technical background that could help me support projects WikiNYC and its members take on. In college, I served for two years as president of my university's LGBTQ+ affinity group, and in my graduate program serve as president of our campus chapter of the National Association of LGBTQ+ Journalists. Both of these roles involved similar responsibilities surrounding financial management, event planning, public engagement and team collaboration.

- I'd prefer to wait and see. Given my newness to the organization, I'd likely be most interested in serving as a non-officer board member.
