Edit-a-thon 7 - 10 July 2026

Time: Friday 10 July 2026, 5-8 pm (note earlier start time for setup)
Location: The Boardroom at "The Exchange", 53-57 Exchange Place, Adelaide. (The old Adelaide Stock Exchange building, now occupied by the Conservation Council of South Australia.)
Agenda: Edit-a-thon - a workshop to help new editors acquire basic editing skills, and how to upload images to Wikimedia Commons for use in Wikipedia articles on SA environment and heritage topics, especially those on SA's coastal and marine environment.
Publicity: To be publicised through the Friends of Parks weekly on-line newsletter, with additional invitations via email, and to active participants in WikiProject Adelaide.
Aims:
- To recruit new editors who may be older and/or retired, and professionals such as scientists and teachers, some of whom may now be less physically able, but still wanting to keep mentally active, and to share their knowledge and experience.
- Experienced editors will be present to assist those needing more guidance/support in navigating WP culture, which can sometimes be quite unwelcoming.
- To improve Wikipedia content as an aid to increasing environmental literacy and appreciation of SA's environment, by expanding article content (and links to further info) on SA's protected areas, flora & fauna species, geology, palaeontology, Indigenous (history and DEW partnerships/co-management of parks), as well as existing articles, e.g. scientific biographies (Mawson, Sprigg, Cleland, Tyler, etc.), scientific institutions (Royal Society of SA, SA Museum, etc.), environmental volunteer groups (FoPN, etc.) and issues (2025 harmful algal bloom, feral animal and plant species, etc.)
- Once they have picked up the basic skills, new editors can also pursue their own topics of interest in more depth.

We are fortunate that Adelaide is the hometown of two Wikimedia Australia staff members, Alison Smith (AlphaLemur) and Belinda Spry (BindiS). In 2025 they facilitated a WMAU Partner Project with the South Australian Museum. This involved a workshop for local editors, training SAM staff in Wikipedia and Wikidata editing, as well as providing a grant for the SAM to host a paid Wikipedian in Residence (Laterthanyouthink) for 100 hours. They are also developing relations with other public institutions such as the State Library and the Art Gallery of South Australia.
Venue
[edit]The Exchange has excellent facilities, with upgraded WiFi connectivity in the Boardroom where the event is to be held. (To enable internet connectivity at our previous events prior to the upgrade, some editors used their mobile phones to create hotspots for their laptops.) The earlier start time, from 5pm, is to allow time for new editors to set up their connections and user accounts before the training session begins.
While a mobile phone can be used by itself for Wikipedia editing, it is generally easier for beginners to use a laptop.
- Hint: If you haven't used your laptop for a while, make sure that you ensure that its software is up-to-date. If you haven't done so, connecting via a mobile phone hotspot may trigger automatic downloading of software upgrades, which can rapidly deplete your mobile phone credit balance.
The event is being auspiced by the Friends of Parks and Nature Inc., and is being advertised to FoPN's ~150 member groups, as well as others with an interest in the marine environment, or South Australian history and heritage.
Further sessions are being run on a monthly basis. For those unable to participate in person, we are exploring the use of Zoom for on-line access to the sessions. For the Zoom link, contact: staff@wikimedia.org.au .

2. Create your userpage by clicking on the redlink and following the prompts to open it for editing. Add a short paragraph, outlining your interests. (Click on "Publish page" to save it - this will turn the redlink blue.)
3. Return to this event page, open it by clicking the "Edit" link near the RHS corner of the page, and add your username to the "New editors" list, and indicating whether participating via Zoom.

- Exploring Wikipedia: Content Creation Training Manual Developed in 2013 during a collaboration between Wikimedia Australia and the State Library of Queensland, this is a guide for those more comfortable using Wikipedia's 'Source Editor' (aka the 'Classic editor'), and wiki markup text formatting.
The Boardroom also has a small library, which the Conservation Council is making available to event participants.
