Wikimedia Foundation

[edit]

Large non-profit organizations generally strive to maintain a reserve of working capital equal to between 12 and 18 months' operating expenses. The purpose of this is to reduce reliance on any single grant maker, donor, or fundraising activity, and to reduce the risks associated with economic recessions or other problems. Fundraising and expenses are normally coordinated to achieve this goal.

The data below has been taken from Wikimedia Foundation Independent Auditors' Reports (section "Statements of Activities"), as linked in the table. "Expenses" listed below include six annual payments of $5 million the Wikimedia Foundation made to the Wikimedia Endowment, from the fiscal year ended June 30, 2016, to the fiscal year ended June 30, 2021.

Wikimedia Endowment

[edit]

The Wikimedia Endowment was set up in 2016 and from 2016 to 2023 was held by the Tides Foundation before being converted into a standalone 501(c)(3) nonprofit. Originally expected to reach $100 million in 2026, it reached the target five years sooner than expected. Right from the start, the Wikimedia Endowment has always been legally separate from the Wikimedia Foundation; as such, its revenue and assets are not and never have been included in Wikimedia Foundation revenue and assets.[2] However, the Wikimedia Foundation handles fundraising for the Wikimedia Endowment, which does not have its own staff. The Wikimedia Foundation has also made donations to the Endowment, as indicated below.

Financial statements from 2016 to 2023 are available on Commons.

  1. Foundation Resolution: Setting Working Capital Reserve Target
  2. "The Foundation has an agreement with the Tides Foundation that established the Wikimedia Endowment as a Collective Action Fund to act as a permanent safekeeping fund to generate income to ensure a base level of support for the Wikimedia projects in perpetuity. The Endowment is independent from the Foundation. From fiscal years ended June 30, 2016 through June 30, 2021, the Foundation provided irrevocable grants in the total amount of $30 million ($5 million per fiscal year) to the Tides Foundation for the purpose of the Wikimedia Endowment. The amounts are recorded in awards and grants expense." Quoted from Financial Statements 2021/2022, p. 15. For pass-through donations to the Endowment not being included in Foundation revenue and assets, see clarification by Caitlin Virtue.
