correct invocations of redirected template

[edit]

There is {{Infobox medical condition}}, which is working fine. At some point, {{Infobox medical condition (new)}} was used for testing and development. Now, (new) is a redirect to the regular template, but hundreds of articles still invoke (new).

Editing articles is difficult enough without discovering and tracing down redirects for different versions of articles, and WP:BRINT advises that In other namespaces, particularly the template and portal namespaces in which subpages are common, any link or transclusion to a former page title that has become a redirect following a page move or merge should be updated to the new title for naming consistency. template redirects shouldn't be kept after page moves for consistency.

Can an AWB task please be built and executed to convert invocations of {{Infobox medical condition (new)}} to {{Infobox medical condition}}? -- mikeblas (talk) 19:23, 20 June 2026 (UTC)Reply

You're looking for WP:AWB/TR. Primefac (talk) 20:18, 20 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
Thanks. How is consensus established before adding a rule there? The page says consensus is necessary but doesn't say where conversations should be hosted. -- mikeblas (talk) 00:40, 21 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
It doesn't have to be a formal RFC (or even "major" discussion), but if something has been done that indicates that a template should not have an old title (such as your example of removing (new) in the name) then it's not unreasonable to have it be on that page for automatic replacement. There is also a reasonable argument to be made that simply adding a template redirect, and no one objecting is a form of consensus. Primefac (talk) 09:28, 21 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
Someone is objecting: me. Seems like a silly argument, anyway, as a redirect can be added without people noticing, even though they'd immediately object if they knew it was added. -- mikeblas (talk) 13:48, 21 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
So if I'm understanding correctly, you're objecting to the fact that no one has gone and done WP:COSMETIC edits on roughly 6,600 pages? These will get done eventually, as each page is touched by an editor with AWB and GenFixes turned on. BAG won't approve a COSMETICBOT, and very few people are willing to click Save on AWB 6,600 times. phuzion (talk) 14:00, 21 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
I think you misunderstood, I was talking about "objecting to adding the redirects to AWB/TR", not creating/using the redirects in the first place. Template redirects exist for a reason and you are unlikely to get consensus to change that status quo. Primefac (talk) 14:07, 21 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
Looks like there's already a rule there for this request. Then: why do so many links exist? Is the problem that it is listed twice? -- mikeblas (talk) 01:10, 21 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
The "new" template was created in 2015, but the "old" template wasn't put out-of-use until 2019, so I'm not really surprised that in those four years most (if not all) of the "old" uses got changed to "new" ones before being moved to the base name.
To address something I missed in your first post, I believe you're misinterpreting BRINT; it's "template redirects shouldn't be kept in the template space after page moves for consistency". We use {{ill}} all over the place, and {{infobox officeholder}} used to have a list of the dozens of redirects to it (which no one really minds). Primefac (talk) 09:23, 21 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
These templates and redirects are all in the template space. Every one of them. -- mikeblas (talk) 13:51, 21 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
I'm not talking about something like {{Infobox medical condition (new)}} existing, I'm talking about (for example) Special:Diff/1353141428 where {{tfm}} was replaced by its full name in {{Template for merging}}. Primefac (talk) 14:14, 21 June 2026 (UTC)Reply

Phuzion, you note that they'll be done eventually, since people with AWB go around every so often. Is AWB set up to replace template redirects with actual template names when you're already doing something else? Nyttend (talk) 09:48, 2 July 2026 (UTC)Reply

(not Phuzion, but...) Yes, as I linked above, anything listed at WP:AWB/TR will be replaced if/when someone edits the page with genfixes turned on. Primefac (talk) 10:16, 2 July 2026 (UTC)Reply

Template:fact before content

[edit]

In this edit, someone added a {{fact}} to the top of Desert climate, citing its insufficient references. It would seem that the user either misunderstood what template to use, or didn't notice that the wrong one had been used, so I've just replaced it. There's no situation in which {{fact}} should appear above the body of the article, although of course it could appear in infoboxes or image captions whose code appears before the body. Would it be practical to run AWB and mass-replace these, or because different templates might apply (e.g. {{More citations needed}} versus {{Unreferenced}}), would that be too complicated to do this way? Nyttend (talk) 00:13, 2 July 2026 (UTC)Reply

I'm not even sure how you would search for this. Is it a common issue? I know I've seen refs at the tops of pages before (i.e. preceding all text) but I don't think I've ever seen an inline maintenance template used instead of a banner. Primefac (talk) 06:08, 2 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
Never seen it before, but since we have 7,215,926 articles on this project, probably there are a few somewhere else. Database dump, maybe? Nyttend (talk) 09:46, 2 July 2026 (UTC)Reply

Lots of deprecations to do

[edit]

There are a large number of sub-categories in Category:Deprecated parameters at the moment. All of them could use an experienced AWB user to do a run. Of particular note are the sportspersons pages. If anyone is interested in taking any of these on, we would sure appreciate it! Feel free to ping me directly with any questions! Zackmann (Talk to me/What I been doing) 22:09, 6 July 2026 (UTC)Reply

Just my usual note to make sure that WP:AWB/RTP is up-to-date so all that is needed for someone choosing a category is to edit the page with genfixes turned on (AWB will do the rest). Primefac (talk) 22:52, 6 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
Appreciate the reminder. Working on that now. Zackmann (Talk to me/What I been doing) 22:57, 6 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
Start with ib boxer, please, I'm doing a run but I'll hold off for a bit. Primefac (talk) 23:10, 6 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
Boxer is good to go. Zackmann (Talk to me/What I been doing) 23:34, 6 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
I will continue to update the rest ASAP. User:Zackmann08/sportspersons shows which ones are ready to go for the moment. Zackmann (Talk to me/What I been doing) 23:43, 6 July 2026 (UTC)Reply

Sorting postal code redirects

[edit]

Could someone sort Category:Redirects from postal codes by country? Many of the contents are for ZIP Codes in the US, so they should be in the subcategory Category:Redirects from ZIP Codes rather than this category. (Some of them, e.g. 33140, are in both, so they should be removed from "Redirects from postal codes".) I also found some German postcodes here, such as 76139; if you think there are enough of them to warrant a category, please create one for them. Nyttend (talk) 19:00, 14 July 2026 (UTC)Reply

It looks like they are almost all in the US. I hope that helps. And this looks like the cleanest fix. – Jonesey95 (talk) 19:44, 14 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
Done with all of the ZIP Code redirects. I think the rest can be sorted by hand. phuzion (talk) 18:48, 15 July 2026 (UTC)Reply

Replace a template at

[edit]

Replace instances of {{Fiction set in year category}} and {{Fiction set in decade category}} with {{Category series navigation}} on subcategories of Category:Works by year of setting and Category:Works by decade of setting, respectively. Wikipedia_talk:Categories_for_discussion#Incomplete_cleanup_by_JJMC89_bot_III and Wikipedia:Templates_for_discussion/Log/2026_July_18#Template:Fiction_set_in_year_category. This is urgent because the affected categories are placed into themselves by these templates. If a category is manually placed in itself, clean up that as well. –LaundryPizza03 (d) 21:33, 18 July 2026 (UTC)Reply

Infobox planet

[edit]

We have implemented a new "type" parameter at {{infobox planet}}. I'm doing the round Solar System objects by hand, and as for the rest, remove the bgcolour= or background= and set type:

  • Small moons: set type=small moon
  • Minor planets: set the type associated with the Minor Planet Center's categorization

LaundryPizza03 (d) 02:45, 19 July 2026 (UTC)Reply

Do you have a category to load? VanIsaac, GHTV contrabout 04:02, 19 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
No, you will have to scrape the color-coding of tables in List of minor planets, which is based on the externally located JPL Small-Body Database. Objects that are indexed as round moons or dwarf planets will already have type= set by now. –LaundryPizza03 (d) 07:37, 19 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
For the moons, you can go to Category:Moons, and it should be easy to pick out which articles to target. –LaundryPizza03 (d) 11:37, 19 July 2026 (UTC)Reply

Update Infobox international volleyball competition using AWB

[edit]

Can someone help to update pages using {{Infobox FIVB tournament}} to replace with {{Infobox international volleyball competition}}? Then, replace the country name in | host = parameter to plain text (e.g. {{CHN}} to China). Next, replace | last = parameters and | next = with | prevseason = and | nextseason = after that wikilink/hyperlink the text (e.g. In the page of 2025 FIVB Women's Volleyball World Championship: {{Infobox international volleyball competition
.
.
.
| prevseason = 2022 FIVB Women's Volleyball World Championship → | prevseason = [[2022 FIVB Women's Volleyball World Championship|2022]]
| nextseason = 2027 FIVB Women's Volleyball World Championship → | nextseason = [[2027 FIVB Women's Volleyball World Championship|2027]]
}})

Pages can be found at Category:Pages using infobox FIVB tournament with unknown parameters. Can all those be done with AWB? 𝙳.𝟷𝟾𝚝𝚑 𝙼𝚎𝚜𝚜𝚊𝚐𝚎 𝚖𝚎 10:53, 23 July 2026 (UTC)Reply

I can handle all of the template renaming with WP:AWB/RTP and WP:AWB/TR, but I'm curious why you would want the host name template removed?
Writing a regex to wikilink the prev/next season should only take a moment. Once I have an answer on why |host= should be converted to plaintext, I'll gladly take care of this. phuzion (talk) 11:20, 23 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
@Phuzion Thanks for offering to help! The switch for | host = to plain text was intended to align with MOS:INFOBOXFLAG and standardize infobox usage by avoiding nested flag templates. Appreciate you taking care of the template renaming, parameter updates (prevseason and nextseason), and setting up the regex for the season links! 𝙳.𝟷𝟾𝚝𝚑 𝙼𝚎𝚜𝚜𝚊𝚐𝚎 𝚖𝚎 11:41, 23 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
Good point! I will see what I can do about removing the host name template, however that might be a little more complicated. There are a variety of countries and templates in use for |host=. phuzion (talk) 13:13, 23 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
@Phuzion Oh if it is complicated then leave it as is. Better to rename and update the parameters of the template. Thanks for helping! 𝙳.𝟷𝟾𝚝𝚑 𝙼𝚎𝚜𝚜𝚊𝚐𝚎 𝚖𝚎 21:29, 23 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
Done, I've cleared the maintenance category! phuzion (talk) 01:51, 27 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
