Veruno
Veruno is a frazione of the comune (municipality) of Gattico-Veruno in the Province of Novara in the Italian region Piedmont, located about 100 kilometres (62 mi) northeast of Turin and about 30 kilometres (19 mi) north of Novara. It was a separate comune until 2018.[1][2]
History
[edit]Veruno was the site of Lombard and Frankish settlements. After Charlemagne's defeat of the Lombard king Desiderius in 774, the settlement, together with the "Corte di Agrate", passed in 962 to the Canonici di San Giulio (the canons of San Giulio).[3] During the 19th century the population grew substantially, a trend followed in the 20th century by significant emigration to other parts of Europe and the Americas.
Churches
[edit]The parish church, dedicated to Hilary of Poitiers, was built from 1659 and consecrated in 1665 by Bishop Giulio Maria Odescalchi.[4] The church of Santa Maria Assunta, in the centre of the village, is undocumented but is thought to date from the 13-14th centuries, with later additions in the 15th century, it was three naves and contains contains 15th–16th century frescoes depicting saints venerated in the Novara area including Saint Gaudentius, Saint Roch and Saint Julius. Its bell tower dates from 1608.[4][5][6]
