The Bicycle Tree is a non-profit, bicycle cooperative workspace in Santa Ana, California.
History
[edit]The Bicycle Tree was founded as a bicycle co-op in 2006 by Paul Nagel, Hector Madrigal-Ramirez, and Gina Marzolo with initial bike repair operations running out of a home in Anaheim.[1][2][3][4] The group of co-founders first came together to distribute food at La Palma Park in Anaheim, and through shared beliefs around the importance of non-motorized transportation and community, decided to provide accessible bike repair and maintenance services to the community.[1] The Bicycle Tree operated out of the Anaheim location for three years on a volunteer basis,[3] before transitioning to mobile bicycle clinics between Santa Ana and Orange.[1][4][3][2]
In 2013, The Bicycle Tree launched a crowdfunding campaign to open a storefront.[1] In 2014, The Bicycle Tree opened up their first brick-and-mortar storefront in Downtown Santa Ana on Main St.[5][3][1] That same year, they also secured non-profit status for the organization.[1]
In 2017, The Bicycle Tree moved to a different storefront in Santa Ana on 17th St., in order to accommodate the community's growing demand for their services.[3]
Programs
[edit]The Bicycle Tree is a non-profit, cooperative bicycle shop that offers bike repair and maintenance services, in addition to low cost bicycle parts and tool access for the community of Orange County. Staff and volunteers assist and teach patrons how to fix their bicycles. They also offer classes on bicycle safety and maintenance, organize community group rides and have donated bicycles to organizations like the Mercy House. They collaborate with community organizations like Santa Ana Active Streets to promote cycling.[1][4]
The Bicycle Tree has more than 200 patrons seek services every week. Nagel shared bicycle co-ops in the Los Angeles area like Bicycle Kitchen served as inspiration for The Bicycle Tree.[3]
