Teofil Moraru was a Romanian sportsman, football manager and referee. He was the first manager of the Romania national football team, taking charge of the side for its inaugural international match against Yugoslavia in June 1922. He later managed Romania again from 1924 to 1928. He was also one of the founders of Universitatea Cluj and a national champion in the shot put.[1]
Football
[edit]Moraru was involved in the development of organised football in Cluj after the First World War. In 1919, he was among the founders of Universitatea Cluj and was also involved in the establishment of the Association of Footballers of Transylvania.[1]
In 1922, Moraru became the selector of the Romanian national team ahead of its first international match. Romania defeated Yugoslavia 2–1 in Belgrade on 8 June 1922. Moraru is regarded by the Romanian Football Federation as the first coach of the national team.[1][2]
According to RSSSF, Moraru managed Romania from 8 June 1922 to 2 September 1923, and again from 31 August 1924 to 15 April 1928.[3]
Refereeing
[edit]Moraru was also a football referee. Contemporary Romanian sports publications record him officiating important matches in the national championship during the 1920s and 1930s.[4]
He refereed the 1930 regional final between Universitatea Cluj and AMEFA Arad, and contemporary accounts describe him as a former athlete of Universitatea Cluj.[5]
Other sports
[edit]Moraru was also active in athletics and became a Romanian national champion in the shot put. The Romanian Football Federation describes him as a doctor of legal sciences as well as one of the founders of Universitatea Cluj.[1]
