Is Ziphioidea part of Physeterida?

[edit]

The beaked whale page https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beaked_whale lists Ziphioidea as a subclade of Physeterida.

But Physeterida seems to be an invalid clade name.

There is no page for Physeterida, nor does Google seem to know what it is. The link to Physeterida goes to Physeteroidea, which does not include Ziphioidea.

I would assume that Physeterida is a (proposed?) larger clade encompassing Physeteroidea and Ziphioidea, but the cladogram for Odontoceti shows there is no such clade (according to that phylogeny), unless Physeterida and Odontoceti were synonymous. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toothed_whale

Should we not drop Physeterida from phylogeny on the Beaked Whale page? ~2026-38808-07 (talk) 15:04, 8 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
