Why subst?

[edit]

Why does the doc say this has to be subst'ed? EEng 02:05, 16 March 2021 (UTC)Reply

@EEng: Because it does nothing but showing the minus sign. A bot subst these kinds of templates automatically. Why should we keep the {{minus}} template in the wiki text when it can be replaced with "−"? Christian75 (talk) 13:18, 11 April 2021 (UTC)Reply
Because it makes it immediately obvious, in the edit window, that the right character is present, which is important since it can be hard to distinguish hyphen, minus, and the various dashes from one another in the edit window. {ndash} and {mdash} and {hyp} aren't subst'd, and if there's reason for this to be different I'd like to hear it. Which bot does the subst'ing? EEng 17:07, 11 April 2021 (UTC)Reply
