Information icon There is currently a discussion at Wikipedia:Village pump (proposals) regarding removing public transit parameters from infoboxes. The thread is RFC: Should we remove mentions of public transport access from infoboxes. Deprecated parameter cleanup

[edit]

I am proposing a cleanup of the conflicting parameters of this Infobox and to ensure that all parameters conform to MOS:INFOBOXNAME. To be clear, this will not change the display on any transclusions. What I am suggesting is reducing technical debt and reducing errors caused by conflicting parameters. The replacements I plan to make are the following:

Deprecate/Remove Replace with
|imagesize= |image_size=
|pushpin_map= |map_type=
|pushpin_relief= |map_relief=
|map dot label= |map_dot_label=
|collection= |collection_size=
|collection size=
|executive director= |executive_director=
|architects= |architect=
|car_park= |parking=
|publictransit= |public_transit=

Any questions or concerns about this clean up, please post below! Zackmann (Talk to me/What I been doing) 16:39, 25 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

Hello Zackmann,
I realize that some of the parameters have recently changed for this template box. I recently tried to use the "deputy director" parameter and I see that it was removed. Is it possible to restore it as a parameter for this template? I am trying to use it on a museum page that has an Executive Director and a Deputy Director on staff. I had to list the person under the "director" parameter and put "deputy director" after their name, which doesn't look as nice and isn't quite as accurate. Deputy Director is a common title in museums, so it may also be helpful to others if it were restored.
Sincerely, DoctorRyan813 (talk) 05:15, 30 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
@DoctorRyan813: that parameter was not removed as part of my clean up (see the diff) and as far as I can tell has never been part of this template. Typically deputy's are not included in infoboxes as this opens the flood gates to a myriad of other positions. If you feel that your particular museum desperately needs to have this position listed in the Infobox, you can use |leader_type=Deputy Director & |leader=Name. Thanks so much for telling me how to apply that title. So I think that it may have previously been a parameter because I saw it listed on the page when I first tried to edit it. When I look at the edit history I can see it listed on the 11th edit down (prev) (06:31, 4 January 2026 WOSlinker). Am I missing something or reading that wrong? I am still new to template boxes. Also, I'm inclined to think "deputy director" is a relevant position for an info box, more so than "employees". I am happy I was able to make my edit, but I want to make sure I'm reading this right as I am still learning. Thanks for your help, DoctorRyan813 (talk) 06:38, 30 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
I don't know where you are seeing a 4 January 2026 edit by WOSlinker because there is no such edit to Template:Infobox museum... Zackmann (Talk to me/What I been doing) 06:40, 30 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
I can't find it anymore, no worries. Thank you you so much for helping me with that code! DoctorRyan813 (talk) 07:03, 30 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
Looking at the page history there is one for the matching time and date, i.e. 06:31, 4 January 2026 (UTC) but it's shown as performed by Zackmann08. The nature of the edit is so that blank parameters are treated the same as absent parameters, but no parameters were either added or removed. The previous edit, that at 20:47, 9 December 2025 (UTC) was performed by WOSlinker: it adds a |logo_class= parameter - this is part of the project for dark mode compatibility (which is still ongoing). --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 12:23, 30 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
Thank you for your clarification about that- I'm trying to ask questions as I go to learn as much as I can.DoctorRyan813 (talk) 17:06, 30 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
Templates can certainly be complicated when you are first starting out. Don't ever hesitate to ask questions. Every single one of us here was, at point, a new editor. The way you learn is by asking questions! One tip though, in the future if you are having an issue with a certain page, when you ask your question be sure to link to the page in question. Makes it much easier for someone to help if we know the page you are working on and can see what you are trying to do! Keep learning. Thanks so much for your patience and help, Zackmann. I will link the page in question in future posts. I'm still not quite sure what happened regarding the deputy director parameter. I am sure I saw it, and someone who was in the room with me that was helping me saw it, too. Before I asked you I also asked my Wiki mentor who said that there was no code for the deputy director parameter, and that they updated the documentation to remove the incorrect information. Perhaps that is why I saw something about it before, but it was not there later when I tried to ask you about it. Over my head at this point, but I sincerely thank you for showing me how to bypass that and update that information correctly on the museum page, and that was my ultimate goal for the edit. Thank you for cleaning up and streamlining this Template Box, and for your patience with me! DoctorRyan813 (talk) 20:01, 30 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

Pushpin map cleanup

[edit]

As part of a larger refactor of Module:Location map, I will be refactoring the way that this Infobox calls the location map code. The only noticeable change for most will be that the parameter names related to the pushpin maps will now all start with |pushpin_...=. This is part of a larger effort to make things consistent across Infoboxes. When this is done, ALL infoboxes using pushpin maps will use the same parameters. For more information about this, please see this post. Note that this follows a long list of similar clean ups that I have done on countless other Infoboxes. The parameters I plan to replace are the following:

Deprecate Replace with
|map_type= |pushpin_map=
|map_alt= |pushpin_alt=
|map_caption= |pushpin_caption=
|map_relief= |pushpin_relief=
|map_dot_label= |pushpin_label=
|map_size= |pushpin_map_size=

Please chime in below with any questions, comments or concerns about this cleanup. Zackmann (Talk to me/What I been doing) 05:04, 8 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
