[edit]

Move this template to {{Format link}} and blank and redirect {{Format linkr}} to {{Format link}}, per TfD discussion linked in the first banner on this talk page. I have checked all of the existing uses of {{format link}} to see if they need to retain underscores (except the Talk:, User (talk):, and (Article) namespaces, as they should not retain underscores or checking wouldn't be worth the effort) and haven't seen any uses of intentional underscores. FaviFake (talk) 16:27, 2 October 2025 (UTC)Reply

Guys this is not hard to do, you just need to copy and paste and redirect :) FaviFake (talk) 19:05, 16 November 2025 (UTC)Reply
The discussion at Wikipedia:Templates for discussion/Log/2025 August 18 § Template:Format link had a couple editors expresss that the |keepunderscore= parameter should be implemented here, but that parameter seems to have never been used, and should not be added to this template. There are about 4,600 transclusions of {{format link}}; can we do a page of testcases before this merger? Template:format link has several other parameters not present in this template; does this template support any of those? A few of the named parameters show up in searches, like italicizesection, but I think we'll need to add TemplateData to check the numbered parameters. Rjjiii (talk) 07:34, 17 November 2025 (UTC)Reply
@Rjjiii The TfD merely ended with consensus to move the code to the better name and redirect {{format linkr}} to there. I agree that such a parameter should not be added, but that can be discussed elsewhere.

Both templates are wrappers for the same module. All parameters from their parent module should work the same. FaviFake (talk) 15:14, 17 November 2025 (UTC)Reply
I created a bare-bones TemplateData section at {{format link}} so that when the report runs in early December, we can see parameter usage. – Jonesey95 (talk) 16:00, 17 November 2025 (UTC)Reply
Thanks! I'm not sure I understood the problem here though. Doesn't the fact that they both wrap around the same module mean their parameters are identical? FaviFake (talk) 16:04, 17 November 2025 (UTC)Reply
There probably isn't a problem, but we should check some existing uses of {{format link}} first. {{Format linkr}} calls two modules to format the output of Module:Format link: Module:Urldecode formats URLs and Module:String is used by {{replace}} to remove underscores. These likely don't but might cause some problem in existing uses. I've completed the TemplateData for both templates. When the usage report updates in a couple weeks we can check the changes against those pages. While we wait, I've done some of the updates needed at Template:Format link/doc; if you want, you can go ahead and draft the post-merge documentation page (in a sandbox or offline). Also, I don't think that we can "blank and redirect" the current {{format link}} because it has a lengthy history. The process described at Wikipedia:Merging (thanks btw for cleaning that page up) seems more appropriate: copy and paste this template to {{format link}} with an edit summary, credit User:Psiĥedelisto in the edit summary, redirect this template, handle subpages, etc. Rjjiii (talk) 17:20, 22 November 2025 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for your explanation.

Yeah, I meant to do exactly what you described but simplified it a bit too much :) FaviFake (talk) 17:27, 22 November 2025 (UTC)Reply
@FaviFake, I've updated {{format linkr}}, relevant content from this template will need to be moved over there (/doc pages examples and explanations). Soon, I will make this template into a redirect there. Rjjiii (talk) 03:03, 12 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
Sounds good, thanks! FaviFake (talk) 18:03, 17 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
@FaviFake, you're welcome and it's now done. After you merge over anything still needed from Template:Format linkr/doc, you can turn that page into a redirect. It looks like GKNishimoto already added the module link box to the documentation. Rjjiii (talk) 03:42, 18 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
Thanks! I tagged them as i don’t have time rn FaviFake (talk) 15:51, 18 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
