Significant space?

[edit]

The template emits an error: "Cite has empty unknown parameter: |(empty string)= (help)". The code is too complicated for me too find its cause. -- Michael Bednarek (talk) 13:45, 19 October 2020 (UTC)Reply

@Michael Bednarek: Fixed – I hope. Nardog (talk) 14:05, 19 October 2020 (UTC)Reply

It passes through one insignificant space from one parameter.

[edit]

Correct:
{{cite EPD|14|Banana}} → Jones, Daniel (1977). "Banana". In Gimson, A. C. (ed.). Everyman's English Pronouncing Dictionary (14th ed.). London: Dent. ISBN 0-460-02191-5.

Currently incorrect:
{{cite EPD | 14 | Banana }} → Jones, Daniel (1977). "Banana". In Gimson, A. C. (ed.). Everyman's English Pronouncing Dictionary (14th ed.). London: Dent. ISBN 0-460-02191-5.

(Until this gets fixed, the above will show "(14 th ed.)" instead of "(14th ed.)".) --A876 (talk) 04:10, 6 February 2026 (UTC)Reply

Above now Fixed. Boghog (talk) 07:52, 19 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

It triggers an error downstream.

[edit]

Currently it sets a value for |work= , which makes {citation} display an error message whenever the edition has an ISBN (editions 14–18). (|work= is usually a periodical or a website.)

The value it sets for |work= is usually(?) identical to the value that it sets to |title=. It was this way since before the change from using {cite book} to {citation} in 2019. (I don't know when {citation} started displaying the error message.)

{{cite EPD|15|Orange}} → Jones, Daniel (1997). "Orange". In Roach, Peter; Hartman, James; Setter, Jane (eds.). Cambridge English Pronouncing Dictionary (15th ed.). Cambridge University Press. ISBN 0-521-45903-6.

(Until this gets fixed, the above will show "{citation}: CS1 maint: work parameter with ISBN (link)".) --A876 (talk) 04:10, 6 February 2026 (UTC)Reply

Bumping. @Nardog, Jonesey95, Boghog, and Headbomb: The not-very-recent editors. Edit: For both errors, please. —DocWatson42 (talk) 04:57, 19 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
Both issues Fixed. The space between "14" and "th" was removed by wrapping with the {{trim}} parameter. The |work= parameter conflict was fixed by changing the template from type {{citation}} to {{cite encyclopedia}}. Boghog (talk) 05:44, 19 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
@Boghog: Well, now we have another problem: the editors are put after the entry, even though they are editors of the entire book, not individual entries. That was the reason {{Citation}} was used, which puts |editor-*= before |chapter=. Do you know if either (or any) template can be made to output editors along with the author rather than for the individual entry, but not emit an error? Nardog (talk) 15:45, 19 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
Asking at WT:CS1#Citing a chapter with no author, in a book with both author and editor. Nardog (talk) 16:32, 19 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
Maybe I am missing something, but aren’t the editors effectively functioning as the authors of the work unless the edition explicitly attributes entries or sections to separate contributors? If so, the simplest solution would be simply to reassign the editor parameters as author parameters. Boghog (talk) 18:04, 19 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
But they're credited as editors, not as authors. One of the main purposes of a citation is to record bibliographical information accurately so readers can find the work easily. Nardog (talk) 05:26, 20 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
As Kanguole has pointed out In this case the original author was responsible for the original work and the editors updated it in later editions. In most citation styles, the editors are displayed after the chapter title and before the book title:
Style Core Order
Vancouver Author → Chapter title → In: Editors → Book title
AMA Author → Chapter title → In: Editors → Book title
Chicago Author → “Chapter Title” → In Book Title, ed. Editors
APA Author → Chapter title → In Editors (Eds.), Book title
MLA Author → “Chapter Title” → Book Title, edited by Editors
Following standard conventions, regardless if there are specified authors or not, the editors should be displayed after the chapter title, not before. Boghog (talk) 17:12, 20 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
