This is a really good idea, but I don't think it does the whole case box thing very well. It just looks like the character has a slightly different background. Maybe increase the size of the character and the thickness of the line? Isaac Rabinovitch (talk) 16:30, 12 January 2026 (UTC)Reply

A lot of experimentation was done to get to the present version. The factors involved were these:
  • "emphasise the picture not the frame", so the framing and the background should be the minimum necessary to identify the character under discussion.
  • some of the characters that the template was created to show are small and obscure, so it is important that the mark-up doesn't confuse
  • the template is designed so that other formatting can be wrapped around it  like {{serif}} or {{red}} for example  so it shouldn't get in the way of that.
  • it should be as unobtrusive as possible, using the same proportionally spaced font as the normal text style of the page. Even then, it came in for quite some criticism in its early days, so thank you for the praise!
If the context justifies it, you might prefer to use {{code}}, which gives a more 'assertive' box: compare @ and ³ (code) with @ and ³ (char) 𝕁𝕄𝔽 (talk) 16:48, 12 January 2026 (UTC)Reply
{{code}} was not used because it adds unremovable whitespace at each end, which for many of the glyphs could be misleading. Spitzak (talk) 20:20, 12 January 2026 (UTC)Reply
As for the size, again if the context justifies it, you can use {{big|{{char|³}}}} to generate ³. --𝕁𝕄𝔽 (talk) 16:57, 12 January 2026 (UTC)Reply
