Template:UCI team code/doc

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In professional road cycling, the name of a team is usually presented as the name of its current sponsor or sponsors and can vary or change completely over time. This template uses a code (normally the three-character UCI team code, but not always) to identify a team regardless of name changes and ensure that the appropriate team name is displayed.

When addressing specific time periods, it is good practice on Wikipedia to refer to a team by the name in use at the referenced point in time rather than e.g. the name it uses today or was best known as. In such cases, this template is most useful when including the "year" parameter as the output will display the contemporary name the team was using.

If two or more sponsors are used in the team name, the sponsor names are separated by an en dash.

Regardless of the code assigned to a team by this template, cycling team articles should be ordinarily be titled as the current name of the team or the name it bore when it disbanded. Any questions or discussions about the lineage of a team should be had on the appropriate article talk pages.

Usage

[edit]

Linked: {{UCI team code|name|year}}, where name is the (UCI)-code of the cycling team, and year (optional) is year.

Not linked: {{UCI team code|name|year|nolink=yes}}, where name is the (UCI)-code of the cycling team, and year (optional) is year.

The following codes are included: (a complete list is found in Category:Cycling team data)

Year

[edit]

In cycling, team names change with sponsors, and so the same team can have a completely different name in different years. For this, the year can be specified. If no year is specified, the most recent teamname is used. If a team changes names during a year, the two names are distinguished by adding a letter. For example, the team currently known as Tinkoff:

{{UCI team code|SAX|1998|nolink=yes}}home–Jack & Jonesthe name of the team in 1998, not linked.

If an unknown team code is added, a red link is displayed, for example:

If an unknown year is added, a warning is given, for example:

  • {{UCI team code|SAX|1997}} gives Tinkoff[Template problem].

If this happens, it generally means that the year is not in the template. If the year should be there, add it to the template or make a request that it should be added.
