Note The first two parameters (bold above) may not be omitted; in particular it is an error to specify only |earliest= and/or |latest=. Italic parameters are optional, bold required.

Illustrates the fossil range of a taxon, the geological range of a stratigraphic unit, or other ranges on an individual period's timescale. Intended for use in {{taxobox}}es, {{Infobox rockunit}}s, and other infoboxes as an addition to {{Geological range}}, if the range is known with enough precision to warrant a zoomed-in version.

You can give a numeric range, or specify the periods involved. The range will not be quoted in text before the timeline, as it is intended to go below the main Phanerozoic timeline.

Periods before the Cambrian are not formally subdivided into epochs or ages, and this template will not work on them, although wider subdivisions can be used alongside {{Long fossil range}}. Available bars can be found at Template:Period fossil range/rangebar.

You can also specify "earliest" and "latest" to add a "ghost" bar beyond the accepted fossil range. You can use these parameters for whatever you like; they may notably be useful where "earliest" fossils are not universally accepted—for instance, the gorgonopsians only have a good fossil record from the Wordian onwards, but the earliest specimen is imprecisely dated, and might be up to Kungurian in age. In this case, you may wish to specify earliest=Kungurian.
