Template:Old Style to New Style
{{{1}}} [{{{3}}} N.S.]
Usage
[edit]This template displays a date in both Old Style (O.S.) and New Style (N.S.), including a discreet link to Old Style and New Style dates, when the year is the same in both styles. Old Style is shown first and New Style in brackets, allowing historical records to be quoted verbatim. It differs from template:OldStyleDate in that Old Style is displayed first; the other template shows New Style first.
{{Old Style to New Style|OS day and month|year|NS day and month|mdy=}}
Fourth parameter (NS year) is ignored.
When using this template, the editor must pre-calculate the conversion between systems as this template does not do so. In particular, its handling of cases where the Old Style date and the New Style date are in different years, is rather unsatisfactory. Editors may find the more recent {{Julian to Gregorian}} template (which does these calculations correctly and automatically) to be a more convenient solution.
Also, when handling dates of events in England and its colonies (where the civil year started on 25 March rather than 1 January until 1752), editors must be careful about dates in this quarter. Many (but not all) sources ignore the legal rule and treat the year as having started on 1 January – which is the convention used by {{Julian to Gregorian}} – but others do not. For use in the latter case, the companion template {{Annunciation Style to New Style}} will again do the calculations correctly and automatically. In either case, it is advisable to use a footnote to clarify which convention is being used,
