What exactly is YIVO an acronym of?

[edit]

doesn'say in the lead, is assumed in next paragraph 2607:FEA8:FF01:4FA6:2111:4E09:C43B:F9E5 (talk) 19:26, 14 January 2025 (UTC)Reply

good catch. I'll update it. Dan Carkner (talk) 20:44, 14 January 2025 (UTC)Reply
So YIVO seems to mean ''Yidisher visnshaftlekher institut''. I get the first 3 letters "YIV", but fail to identify the "O". Therefore the meaning could be incomplete. As I couldn't find an explanation on the internet: Anyone knows, what the last letter "O" stands for? DaveroDia (talk) 23:17, 31 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
oh good question. the simple answer is that the first letter in the Yiddish word for institute is an Aleph ("a" or "o" in Yiddish) not a Yodh ("i"), even though it's a silent letter (shtumer alef). as for why it becomes an O and not an A, I asked around and people aren't sure. Someone thought they heard at some point that an Aleph often becomes an O in Yiddish acronyms. Dan Carkner (talk) 14:59, 1 August 2025 (UTC)Reply
