Etyomology of Xpuhil

The name 'Xpuhil' doesn't seem to follow Yucatec Maya phonotactics. Specifically the onset of the first syllable, 'Xp' (pronounced /ʃp/) is a consonant cluster that isn't seen at the begining of words in yucatec or classic maya. This article says, mistakenly, that the place's name means cat's tail, when in reality it refers to the plant cattail. Looking at the sources, one says that only 'puh' means cattail, while leaving out what the rest of the word means. Another mentions two possible etymologies, one just citing 'Xpuhil' to mean cattail and the other being from 'puh' meaning hunting and 'il' meaning place of. One of the Spanish sources also claims 'il' means place of, while 'xpuh' means cattail. I looked up dictionaries for Yucatec Maya and found no mentions of 'puh' or 'xpuh' for cattail. I did find [maya-yucatec-dictionary-amp-phrasebook-maya-english-english-maya-0781808596 one dictionary] that included words such as xkaax (chicken) or xnuuk (old woman), but it says these where pronounced with an initial /i/ sound, except for one example, xni' (nose) but earlier it claims nose is just ni'. I did find one Classical Maya dictionary which lists 'puj' as cattail reed.

To summarize, almost no sources explain where the initial 'x' comes from, and dictionaries do not support that the initial x was part of a word 'xpuh' that meant cattail, while at least one source says 'puj' without the initial x does mean it. Even so, an initial x in yucatec maya seems to also come with an initial /i/ sound, probably to not break Yucatec Maya's phonotactics. Diegonals (talk) 06:37, 5 July 2025 (UTC)
