• "After the Zhengde Emperor (r. 1505–1521) ascended the throne, he appointed Xi as assistant surveillance commissioner of Henan." Can you give the year of the appointment?
  • At the beginning of the Cheng-te reign Hsi was appointed assistant surveillance commissioner of Honan.
• "After returning to service, Xi became surveillance commissioner of Zhejiang." Again, can you provide the year for this appointment?
  • After completing the mourning period, he was appointed surveillance commissioner of Chekiang; in the following year he was sent to Shantung as junior administration commissioner. Subsequently he _ returned home because of the death of his mother. In 1517 he received orders to be successively junior right administration commissioner of Yunnan and senior administration commissioner of Fukien.
• "Xi agreed with the Emperor's position and drafted a memorial supporting him, but hesitated to submit it to the Ministry of Rites for official consideration. The memorial nevertheless came into the hands of another supporter of the Emperor, Gui E". Is there any explanation of the chain of events that led Gui E to receive Xi's memorial?
• "In spring 1525, Xi proposed appointing Wang Yangming to a senior government position, arguing that the incumbent ministers were men of only average ability." Could you briefly describe Wang Yangming's achievements and qualities that would lead Xi to see him as especially skilled?
• "The Emperor rejected both proposals." Only one proposal was listed in this paragraph.
