I'll take this review. Given the length of the article, it may take one or two weeks to have a review written. elijahpepe@wikipedia (he/him) 21:26, 12 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

As this is going to be a large review, I will publish my progress and notify you when I am completely finished. elijahpepe@wikipedia (he/him) 22:47, 12 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
Thank you, I'll be waiting. The Account 2 (talk) 09:09, 13 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
So uh is this review still on or? The Account 2 (talk) 10:34, 28 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
Yes, I am still trying to work through it. elijahpepe@wikipedia (he/him) 15:07, 28 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
@The Account 2: Circumstances in my personal life, issues obtaining some of the sources, problems with this specific review, and time commitments with other GA reviews mean that I do not believe that I can finish this review. I am going to close this review; I encourage you to resubmit this article for review. This article is around 14,600 words; per WP:TOOLARGE, it is nearing a point where it "certainly should be divided or trimmed." Getting the article to a smaller size may make it easier for any future reviewers. elijahpepe@wikipedia (he/him) 04:25, 6 August 2026 (UTC)Reply

Initial reference search conducted as of May 29, 2026, at 1:17 p.m. PDT. elijahpepe@wikipedia (he/him) 21:58, 29 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

The article is changing quickly day-to-date. I'm going to do a second search of June 9, 2026, at 2:51 p.m. PDT. To try to reduce the risk of having to do another search, I won't release the results of that search until I'm finished. Going through each and every reference should also allow me to finish the rest of the review. This may take a week or two. elijahpepe@wikipedia (he/him) 21:51, 9 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
Ok, I apologize if my recents additions created too many changes. I will refrain from making major edits from now on. The Account 2 (talk) 12:59, 11 June 2026 (UTC)Reply

References

[edit]

References are presented inline, but MOS:FNNR requires that books either be in shortened footnote format or with the page numbers embedded in the citation itself. Either format is fine, but neither can exist at the same time. This will need to be fixed. elijahpepe@wikipedia (he/him) 21:58, 29 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

@The Account 2: Could you decide whether the article should use shortened footnotes, as references 6, 8, and 9 do presently, or whether the page numbers should be inline with the citation, as reference 19 does presently? Regardless of the format, anything that involves page numbers, including PDFs, will need page numbers included. elijahpepe@wikipedia (he/him) 01:52, 3 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
Yes, I'm moving the sources to make them inline. PDFs are also covered, right? The Account 2 (talk) 07:55, 3 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
Yes. elijahpepe@wikipedia (he/him) 08:39, 3 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
Additionally, should I try to find the page numbers for the PDFs that don't currently have their page numbers listed? The Account 2 (talk) 08:42, 3 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
Yes. elijahpepe@wikipedia (he/him) 09:01, 3 June 2026 (UTC)Reply

Early life and education
[edit]
  • Reference 14 supports the claim made in the preceding clause, but it is a direct quotation from Xi. I would remove this reference; the other one does most of the work as it is by explaining that "second-generation reds" attended that school. elijahpepe@wikipedia (he/him) 18:40, 1 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
 Done; removed it. The Account 2 (talk) 10:23, 2 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
  • Reference 15 supports the claim made in the preceding clause, though this is a strange reference to use. No obligation to change it, but if you feel that another would be appropriate, you are welcome to change it. elijahpepe@wikipedia (he/him) 18:40, 1 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
Done; Torigian is better here. The Account 2 (talk) 10:23, 2 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
  • Reference 16 and Reference 17 do not support the claims made in the preceding clause, particularly the sentence about the Cultural Revolution. The article from The New York Times appears comprehensive, so I would recommend going back and looking at what it says about Xi's life after the Cultural Revolution started. elijahpepe@wikipedia (he/him) 18:40, 1 July 2026 (UTC)Reply

Done; replaced with a better source. The Account 2 (talk) 11:24, 2 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
  • Reference 22 misreads the article to make a claim that isn't quite what the source says. I would go back and review this source. It does appear to support what Reference 21 is supposed to support, so I would delete Reference 21 and cite its sentence to Reference 22. elijahpepe@wikipedia (he/him) 18:40, 1 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
Done; did as you suggested. The Account 2 (talk) 10:34, 2 July 2026 (UTC)Reply

  • Reference 31 supports the claim made in the preceding clause.
  • Reference 32 partially supports the claim made in the preceding clause, though I believe the page number is wrong. The information that was cited to Reference 30 is actually supported here, except this conflicts with what Reference 30 says. Given that it comes from Xi, I would lean towards Reference 30's framing of events. elijahpepe@wikipedia (he/him) 18:40, 1 July 2026 (UTC)Reply

Early political career
[edit]
Done; fixed the date. The Account 2 (talk) 12:13, 21 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
  • Reference 36 supports some of the claims made in the preceding clause. I would refine this by saying that Xi worked at the General Office of the State Council as Geng Biao's secretary, who was the secretary-general of the Central Military Commission. elijahpepe@wikipedia (he/him) 16:57, 19 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
 Done. The Account 2 (talk) 12:13, 21 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
  • Reference 18 supports some of the claims made in the preceding clause, but it offers less information than Reference 36 past refining that Geng was a "senior defense official". elijahpepe@wikipedia (he/him) 16:57, 19 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
  • Reference 37 does not support the claim made in the preceding clause. The book itself has plenty of information about Geng in the previous section—the name of the section mentions him explicitly—including that Geng had three mìshū and that Xi accompanied Geng to a visit to the Pentagon; I found that on page 45, so I would go back and check the page numbers. elijahpepe@wikipedia (he/him) 16:57, 19 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
  • Reference 38 does not support the claim made in the preceding clause. I found the information on page 333, though only the month and note the exact date. elijahpepe@wikipedia (he/him) 16:57, 19 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
Done, fixed the page. The Account 2 (talk) 12:13, 21 July 2026 (UTC)Reply

He also concentrated on the development of Changle International Airport Appears to fail verification. The cited source does not mention airport. This whole paragraph probably needs a lift with sources that directly about the 1999 period.Czarking0 (talk) 22:22, 5 July 2026 (UTC)Reply

In the wake of the 2008 Sichuan earthquake, Xi visited disaster areas in Shaanxi and Gansu. The cited source neither mentions disaster, Shanxi, nor Gansu. The only mention of earthquake does not support this.Czarking0 (talk) 15:01, 21 July 2026 (UTC)Reply

The fact that you removed all these failed verifications indicates that this article does meet the WP:GAC on WP:V. I did not perform a detailed review of all the claims and there are almost certainly further unverified and fanpov claims in the article.Czarking0 (talk) 04:21, 23 July 2026 (UTC)Reply

@Czarking0: This is not how verifiability is determined. You cannot make guesses and you certainly cannot quickfail a review that is not yours and that the reviewer is actively working to fix. This behavior is downright disruptive and this is going to be the final warning on trying to hijack this review. elijahpepe@wikipedia (he/him) 01:16, 28 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
This is not quickfailing. If you leave reviews open for months that clearly have issues they will be closed Czarking0 (talk) 04:10, 28 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
The review has been open because I'm taking my time on this and not trying to rush through it. Whether it has issues is still being determined, and the main editor has been responding to each issue promptly. elijahpepe@wikipedia (he/him) 06:14, 28 July 2026 (UTC)Reply

several months as acting governor The source does not indicate the period for which he was governor.Czarking0 (talk) 04:29, 23 July 2026 (UTC) In the wake of the 2008 Sichuan earthquake, Xi visited Shaanxi, which was also hit by the earthquake. Source does not support this. I want to highlight again that almost every paragraph has had claims that fail verification during this review.Czarking0 (talk) 05:08, 4 August 2026 (UTC)Reply

Original research

[edit]
  • I didn't see a citation for "in the 1960s" in the second paragraph of the "Early life and education". Some of the content here is separated in a way that makes it difficult to follow. I believe that Xi began attending the Beijing Bayi School when he was six or seven, which is what Radio Free Asia reported in 2018. Li's paper says that Xi transferred to the Beijing No. 25 School after the Beijing Bayi School, which happened in January 1967, according to an account from Li Heshun in 2007. elijahpepe@wikipedia (he/him) 07:51, 31 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
Rewrote a bit. I had created a more detailed summary of Xi's early life at the Early life of Xi Jinping. I think we can use that article as a template to summarize key points in in the main Xi article. The Account 2 (talk) 11:08, 31 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

Neutral

[edit]

As far as I am aware, the article is about as neutral as possible. There is some bias towards Western sources, but that is completely understandable and does not detract from the accuracy of the article. elijahpepe@wikipedia (he/him) 17:06, 1 June 2026 (UTC)Reply

Czarking0's comments

[edit]

In Shanghai, Xi avoided controversy and was known for strictly observing party discipline. For example, Shanghai administrators attempted to earn favour with him by arranging a special train to shuttle him between Shanghai and Hangzhou for him to complete handing off his work to his successor as Zhejiang party secretary Zhao Hongzhu. However, Xi reportedly refused to take the train, citing a loosely enforced party regulation that stipulated that special trains can only be reserved for "national leaders" I have significant concern with this statement. I do not doubt he attempted to avoid controversy but to state it like this makes it seem that there were no controversies involving him while in Shanghai. I think a wider source support is warranted. Then the train anecdote reads like something you have have arranged so you can publish propaganda about it. Czarking0 (talk) 02:54, 8 July 2026 (UTC)Reply

NYT has Xi "favoring deeper market-oriented reforms" which is not reflected in this section. I also think that if he was known for not drawing controversy then NYT would have noted that in this piece. At least the discrepancy is due for inclusion.[1] The Wall Street Journal had a similar sentiment saying he has a "reputation for pro-market policies".[2]Czarking0 (talk) 01:29, 9 July 2026 (UTC)Reply

In general, I found most of the images to be appropriate and well-captioned. The aforementioned licensing restriction on Chinese government images is an understandable fault. elijahpepe@wikipedia (he/him) 22:47, 12 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

I felt "Political development" sections could be better. This video is important as it marked the official confirmation that Xi was re-elected as the CCP general secretary for a third term (in China, every time a new Politburo Standing Committee is confirmed, the first thing they do is hold a meeting with the press).
